Mediana pelit tarjoavat monille kosketuksen englannin kieleen vapaa-ajallakin, ja t\u00e4llaisesta \r\ninformaalista koulun ulkopuolisesta englannin kielest\u00e4 on tutkimusten mukaan suurta hy\u00f6ty\u00e4 \r\nkieltenopiskelijalle. \r\nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin keskisuomalaisten yhdeks\u00e4sluokkalaisten (N=34) videopelien \r\npelaamisen yhteytt\u00e4 englannin kielitaitoon, jota arvioitiin oppilaiden kolmen viimeisimm\u00e4n englannin \r\nkurssiarvosanan keskiarvolla, sek\u00e4 pienell\u00e4 synonyymien yhdistelytestill\u00e4. Oppilaiden \r\nvideopeliharrastusta sek\u00e4 muita koulun ulkopuolisia englanninkielisi\u00e4 harrastuksia kartoitettiin kyselyll\u00e4. \r\nKysely toteutettiin oppilaiden englannin tunnin aikana. \r\nVaikka aiemmissa vastaavissa tutkimuksissa pelaamisen ja englannin taidon v\u00e4lill\u00e4 on pystytty \r\nl\u00f6yt\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n positiivinen korrelaatio, t\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa n\u00e4in ei k\u00e4ynyt. Tulokset osoittivat, ett\u00e4 vaikka \r\npaljon pelaavat oppilaat n\u00e4yttiv\u00e4tkin k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4n englannin kielt\u00e4 paljon enemm\u00e4n pelatessaan kuin v\u00e4h\u00e4n \r\npelaavat oppilaat, heid\u00e4n englannin kielen taitonsa eiv\u00e4t kuitenkaan olleet yht\u00e4 korkealla tasolla. \r\nKorrelaatiot pelaamiseen k\u00e4ytetyn viikottaisen ajan sek\u00e4 englanninkielen arvosanojen ja synonyymitestin \r\ntulosten v\u00e4lill\u00e4 olivat negatiiviisia, joskaan eiv\u00e4t tilastollisesti merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4. \r\nTutkimustulosten luotettavuus ja yleistett\u00e4vyys k\u00e4rsiv\u00e4t pienest\u00e4 otannasta ja siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 pelaajat \r\njakaantuivat melko paljolti v\u00e4h\u00e4n pelaaviin tytt\u00f6ihin ja paljon pelaaviin poikiin. Tytt\u00f6jen yleinen \r\nparempi koulumenestys saattoi vaikuttaa ratkaisevasti tuloksiin.
