Tutkimuksen tavoitteena on kuvata, miten taidel\u00e4ht\u00f6iset menetelm\u00e4t, erityisesti perinteinen japanilainen kamishibai-tarinateatteri, voivat rikastuttaa vieraan kielen opetusta ja edist\u00e4\u00e4 oppilaiden aktiivista osallistumista, itseilmaisua ja oppimismotivaatiota. Tutkimuksessa hy\u00f6dynnettiin laadullista l\u00e4hestymistapaa, ja aineistona toimi seitsem\u00e4n luokanopettajaopiskelijoiden suunnittelemaa ja osittain toteuttamaa monialaista oppimiskokonaisuutta sek\u00e4 niihin liittyv\u00e4t ryhm\u00e4reflektiot.\n\nAineisto analysoitiin teoriaohjaavan ja aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla. Tuloksista ilmeni, ett\u00e4 taidel\u00e4ht\u00f6iset menetelm\u00e4t, kuten kamishibai, tukevat kielenoppimisen tavoitteita monipuolisesti erityisesti silloin, kun oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6 mahdollistaa oppilaiden aktiivisen toimijuuden ja luovan itseilmaisun. Kamishibai tarjosi autenttisia ja merkityksellisi\u00e4 kielenk\u00e4yt\u00f6n tilanteita, jotka vahvistivat sek\u00e4 sanaston ja rakenteiden oppimista ett\u00e4 kulttuurista ja emotionaalista ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4. Opettajaopiskelijat kokivat, ett\u00e4 taidel\u00e4ht\u00f6iset menetelm\u00e4t motivoivat oppilaita, tukivat monilukutaitoa ja loivat tilaa oppilaiden omille kokemuksille ja ideoille.\n\nTutkimus osoittaa, ett\u00e4 taidel\u00e4ht\u00f6isten ja toiminnallisten menetelmien pedagoginen hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen edellytt\u00e4\u00e4 huolellista suunnittelua ja riitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti aikaa opetuksen valmisteluun. The aim of the study is to examine how arts-based approaches, particularly the traditional Japanese storytelling theatre kamishibai, can enrich foreign language instruction and promote pupils\u2019 active participation, self-expression, and motivation to learn. The study adopts a qualitative research approach, using data collected from seven interdisciplinary learning material packages designed and partially implemented by student teachers, as well as their group reflections on the teaching experiences.\n\nThe data were analysed using both theory-driven and data-driven content analysis. The results indicate that arts-based methods such as kamishibai support language learning in diverse and engaging ways, especially when learning environments encourage pupils\u2019 active agency and allow room for creative expression. Kamishibai provided authentic and meaningful contexts for language use, enhancing not only the acquisition of vocabulary and structures, but also pupils\u2019 emotional and cultural understanding. Student teachers reported that arts-based methods increased pupil motivation, supported multiliteracy skills, and created space for learners\u2019 personal ideas and experiences.\n\nThe findings suggest that while arts-based and activity-oriented methods have strong pedagogical potential, their successful implementation requires careful planning and sufficient preparation time. Although challenges such as access to materials and storytelling skills were noted, these methods were found to enhance pupils\u2019 engagement and collaborative learning.
