Se kattaa useita pelimuotoja ja on kasvanut ammattimaiseksi lajiksi, jossa kilpailijat kehittävät mentaalisia ja teknisiä taitojaan. Keskeisiä haasteita ovat huijaaminen, doping ja ottelumanipulaatio, jotka vaarantavat kilpailun reiluuden ja lajille tärkeän eettisen pohjan. Huijauksia estetään muun muassa anti-cheat-teknologioilla, koneoppimiseen perustuvilla valvontajärjestelmillä ja yhteisöpohjaisella valvonnalla. Dopingin ja ottelumanipulaation torjunta on vaikeampaa sääntelyn hajanaisuuden vuoksi. Kansalliset ja kansainväliset järjestöt, kuten Esports Integrity Commission, pyrkivät kuitenkin edistämään reilua peliä yhtenäisten sääntöjen avulla. Tutkielma tuo esille tarpeen kehittää laajempaa sääntelyä ja yhteistyötä eri toimijoiden välillä, jotta e-urheilun kasvu ja kestävä kehitys voidaan turvata. This thesis examines the development, operational models, and challenges of electronic sports, or e-sports. The thesis was made as a descriptive literature review, looking for the highest quality and freshest sources on the subject, from which the contents of the thesis were compiled. Since the 1990s, e-sports has rapidly evolved, achieving a significant position in both the entertainment and sports industries. It encompasses various game modes and has grown into a professional field where competitors hone their mental and technical skills. Key challenges include cheating, doping, and match-fixing, which threaten the fairness of competition and the ethical foundation critical to the sport. Cheating is countered through anti-cheat technology, machine learning-based monitoring systems, and community-based oversight. Doping and match-fixing are more difficult to address due to fragmented regulation; however, national and international organizations, such as the Esports Integrity Commission, aim to promote fair play through standardized rules. The thesis highlights the need for broader regulation and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure sustainable growth and development in e-sports.
