Tutkielman teoreettisena viitekehyksenä on intermediaalisuuden tutkimussuunta, jonka monialaiset näkökulmat auttavat huomioimaan useat koodeksin mediarepresentaatioon vaikuttavat vivahteet.

dc.description.abstract
In this thesis I examine the form and meaning of book objects in the video game Disco Elysium (2021 [2019]). The thesis focuses on issues relating to the materiality and interactivity of the game’s books, the different connections to real-life that can be found from the them, and the importance of these books as a part of the world of Elysium.

The theoretical framework centers around the concept of intermediality, which provides a multidisciplinary perspective on the media representation of the codex. The thesis draws from theories provided by book studies, literature studies and game studies, and philosophical theories on the ontology of objects and things.

The analysis is divided into three chapters. The first chapter explores the materiality of book objects and the game’s unique dialogue-based interactions. The second chapter examines the representation of different literary genres, where the parodic and humorous perspectives on real-life literature mix with a certain homage-like and commentative quality. The third chapter focuses on the readers and literary spaces in the game, which reveal the social significance of books and reading in the game’s world.

Disco Elysium presents books in an original and fresh manner. A key aspect of this representation is found in the game’s dialogue, where books get a clear voice and agency similar to that of human characters. Thus, the game’s books could be classified as book things rather than book objects due to their distinct thoughts and opinions about themselves as well as their surroundings. The game parodies genres like crime and fantasy literature, adopting a self-ironic and apprectiative tone instead of direct criticism or ridicule. For instance, the representation of crime fiction serves as a homage to the genre's real-life pioneers whose popularity paved way for among other things the game itself. Additionally, the act reading and being well-read are depicted as valuable activities for relaxation and learning, especially for the working class. Overall, the representation of books – ranging from their physical form to genre conventions, readers and literary spaces – paints a nuanced picture of a society that values literature as an integral part of everyday life.
dc.description.provenance
Made available in DSpace on 2024-06-28T07:39:21Z (GMT).
