Voimaharjoittelulla on havaittu positiivinen vaikutus unen laatuun suoraan, mutta my\u00f6s uneen liittyvien sairauksien hoitoon ja ennaltaehk\u00e4isyyn, kuten mielenterveysongelmiin ja lihavuuteen. Unen laadun vaikutusta voimaharjoittelun adaptaatioihin on taas tutkittu hyvin v\u00e4h\u00e4n. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 unen laadun ja voimaharjoittelun vastavuoroista vaikutusta.\n\nTutkielmassa toteutettiin 12 viikon voimaharjoitteluinterventio, jossa harjoiteltiin valvotusti kaksi kertaa viikossa. Tutkittavat (n = 174) olivat voimaharjoittelun osalta aloittelijoita ja l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohtaisesti normaalipainoisia (BMI = 26 \u00b1 4,3 kg/m2). Tutkittavat olivat i\u00e4lt\u00e4\u00e4n 36 \u00b1 6,4-vuotiaita. Mitattuja muuttujia tutkielmassa olivat jalkapr\u00e4ssin yhden toiston maksimi (1 RM), vastus lateralis -lihaksen poikkipinta-ala sek\u00e4 uni- ja stressikyselyjen tulokset. Kaikki muuttujat mitattiin ennen intervention alkua ja sen p\u00e4\u00e4tytty\u00e4, mutta unikysely toteutettiin my\u00f6s intervention puolessa v\u00e4liss\u00e4, jotta pystyttiin tarkastelemaan sit\u00e4, miten nopeasti voimaharjoittelun aloittaminen mahdollisesti vaikuttaa unen laatuun.\n\nUnen laatu parani alussa heikosti nukkuvilla jo kuuden viikon kohdalla tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti (p < 0,05). Alussa hyvin nukkuneilla unen laatu pysyi l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohtaisesti samana, mutta unen pituuden ja tehokkuuden osalta havaittiin muutoksia. Tutkittavien keskim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4inen unen laatu korreloi keskim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4isesti koetun stressin kanssa (p < 0,05, rs = 0,492). Koettu stressi laski tutkittavilla intervention aikana riippumatta l\u00e4ht\u00f6tasosta. Koettu stressi tai unen laatu ei selitt\u00e4nyt lihasvoiman tai lihaksen poikkipinta-alan muutoksien eroja ryhm\u00e4tasolla. Intervention aikainen unen laatu kuitenkin korreloi tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti lihaksen poikkipinta-alan muutoksien kanssa (p < 0,05, rs = -0,185, n = 119), kun tarkasteltiin vain keskim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4isesti matalaa stressi\u00e4 kokenutta ryhm\u00e4\u00e4. Toisin sanoen, parempi unen laatu ennusti suurempaa kehittymist\u00e4 lihaksen poikkipinta-alassa kyseisell\u00e4 ryhm\u00e4ll\u00e4.\n\nVoimaharjoitteluinterventio parantaa unen laatua ja koettua stressi\u00e4 tutkittavilla, joilla ei ole aikaisempaa taustaa voimaharjoittelusta. Voimaharjoitteluintervention vaikutus unen laatuun ja koettuun stressiin on positiivinen tai v\u00e4hint\u00e4\u00e4nkin neutraali, riippuen yksil\u00f6n l\u00e4ht\u00f6tasosta. T\u00e4m\u00e4 on linjassa aikaisemman tutkimusn\u00e4yt\u00f6n kanssa. Resistance training has been observed to have a positive effect in subjective sleep quality in recent studies. Furthermore, it has also had a positive effect in the treatment and prevention of sleep-related comorbidities. The amount of research in the effect of sleep quality in terms of resistance training adaptations has been very scarce. The aim of the thesis was to investigate the reciprocal association of sleep quality and resistance training.\n\nThe study included a 12-week resistance training intervention where the participants (n = 174) trained twice a week and their training was done under supervision in every session. They had no previous background in resistance training, were normal weight (BMI = 26 \u00b1 4,3 kg/m2) and were 36 \u00b1 6,4-years old. The variables that were measured during the intervention were 1 RM leg press, vastus lateralis muscle cross-sectional area and the results of the questionnaires related to sleep quality and perceived stress. All the measured variables were assessed before and after the intervention but also in the middle of the intervention for sleep quality so that it was possible to examine whether the resistance training potentially affected sleep quality in the first six weeks of the intervention.\n\nThe participants that reported poor sleep quality at start of the intervention, improved their quality of sleep already at midpoint of the intervention (p < 0,05). Individuals with already good sleep quality at the start of the intervention maintained their quality of sleep on average, some changes were observed in terms of sleep duration and efficiency. The average quality of sleep of the participants correlated significantly with the average perceived stress (p < 0,05, rs = 0,492). Perceived stress decreased during the intervention regardless of the baseline of perceived stress. Perceived stress or quality of sleep did not explain the differences between the participants in changes of muscle strength or muscle cross-sectional area at the group level. During the intervention sleep quality correlated with the change of muscle cross-sectional area (p < 0,05, rs = -0,185, n = 119) when examined on those individuals who also reported on average low perceived stress throughout the intervention. In other words, better sleep quality predicted greater development in muscle cross-sectional area in that group.\n\nResistance training intervention improves sleep quality and perceived stress on individuals that do not have previous background in resistance training. This is in line with previous literature on the effect of physical activity on sleep quality and perceived stress. Resistance training intervention seems to affect quality of sleep rather quickly, since the change was statistically significant already at six weeks in. It prompts further investigation into how fast the rate of change is in terms of sleep quality with individuals that do not have background in resistance training. Sleep quality or perceived stress alone did not explain the differences in adaptations in terms of muscle strength or cross-sectional area.
