Terveytt\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4n ruokavalion pohjan muodostaa monipuolinen kasvisten nauttiminen, mutta niiden sy\u00f6ntisuosituksen on saavuttanut aiemman tutkimuksen mukaan vain harva korkeakouluopiskelija. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 omillaan asuvien korkeakouluopiskelijoiden taloudellisen tilanteen, demografisten muuttujien sek\u00e4 opiskelijaravintoloiden k\u00e4yt\u00f6n yhteytt\u00e4 kasvisten sy\u00f6nnin useuteen. Tavoitteena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, selitt\u00e4v\u00e4tk\u00f6 my\u00f6s taloudelliset syyt ruokak\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytymist\u00e4 terveysvalintojen ohella.\n\nTutkimuksen aineistona k\u00e4ytettiin Terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin laitoksen korkeakouluopiskelijoiden terveystutkimuksen aineistoa kev\u00e4\u00e4lt\u00e4 2021. Aineisto on ker\u00e4tty satunnaisotannalla kattaen yliopistot ja ammattikorkeakoulut Suomessa. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen analyysiin sis\u00e4llytettiin omillaan asuvat opiskelijat (N=2508). Tilastollisina analyysein\u00e4 k\u00e4ytetiin ristiintaulukointia ja bin\u00e4\u00e4rist\u00e4 logistista regressiomallia. Aineisto analysoitiin IBM Statistics 28-ohjelmalla.\n\nOmillaan asuvista korkeakouluopiskelijoista vain joka viides noudatti vihannesten ja juuresten sy\u00f6ntisuositusta. Useita kertoja p\u00e4iv\u00e4ss\u00e4 hedelmi\u00e4 ja marjoja raportoi sy\u00f6neens\u00e4 vain joka seitsem\u00e4s opiskelija. Naisopiskelijat s\u00f6iv\u00e4t sy\u00f6ntisuosituksien mukaisesti miesopiskelijoita useammin. Taloudellisen tilanteen ja kasvisten sy\u00f6nnin v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ei havaittu yksiselitteist\u00e4 yhteytt\u00e4. Kasvisten sy\u00f6ntisuosituksen noudattamisen todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isyytt\u00e4 lis\u00e4si taloudellisen tilanteen sijaan ennemminkin naissukupuoli, opiskelu yliopistossa ammattikorkeakouluun verrattuna sek\u00e4 opiskelijaravintoloiden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 4\u20137 p\u00e4iv\u00e4n\u00e4 viikossa verrattuna v\u00e4hemm\u00e4n ateriaetua hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4neiden ryhmiin.\n\nSuomalaisista korkeakouluopiskelijoista vain harva t\u00e4ytti kasvisten sy\u00f6ntisuosituksen, mik\u00e4 on linjassa aiempien kansainv\u00e4listen tutkimusten tulosten kanssa. Opiskelijaravintoloissa useammin sy\u00f6minen oli yhteydess\u00e4 kasvisten sy\u00f6ntisuosituksen toteutumiseen, mik\u00e4 perustelee aiemman tutkimustiedon tapaan joukkoruokailun merkityst\u00e4 yksil\u00f6n terveytt\u00e4 edist\u00e4v\u00e4n ruokavalion toteutumisessa. University students are at a new stage in their lives, often taking responsibility for their own food choices for the first time. The basis of a healthy diet is a varied intake of vegetables, but previous research has shown that only few university students meet the recommendation to eat them. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the economic status, demographic variables and the use of student restaurants among university students living on their own and the frequency of vegetable consumption. The aim was to determine whether financial reasons, in addition to health choices, explain food choices. \n\nThe data was collected from the Health and Welfare Institute's Health Survey of University Students in the spring of 2021. The data was collected by random sampling covering universities and universities of applied sciences in Finland. Students living on their own (N=2508) were included in the analysis of this study. Statistical analyses were performed using cross tabulation and a binary logistic regression model. Data were analysed using IBM Statistics 28 software.\n\nAmong university students living on their own, only one in five followed the recommendation to eat vegetables and root vegetables. Only one in seven students reported eating fruit and berries several times a day. Female students were more likely to eat according to the dietary recommendations than male students. No clear link was found between economic status and vegetable intake. The likelihood of following the vegetable consumption recommendation was rather increased in females compared to males, university students compared to polytechnic students and using student restaurants 4-7 days a week compared to the groups with fewer visits at the student restaurants.\n\nFew Finnish university students met the recommended intake of vegetables, which is in line with the results of previous international studies. Eating more often in student canteens was associated with meeting the recommended intake of vegetables, which, like previous research, justifies the importance of mass catering in achieving a health-promoting diet for individuals. The findings highlight the importance of nutritional interventions to increase vegetable intake among university students, particularly among men and polytechnic students.
