Sis\u00e4lle suojauduttaessa suljetaan ja tiivistet\u00e4\u00e4n ilmanvaihto mahdollisimman hyvin, mist\u00e4 huolimatta radioaktiivisia aineita tihkuu sis\u00e4ilmaan. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkittiin siirrett\u00e4vien kaupallisesti saatavilla olevien ilmanpuhdistimien kyky\u00e4 ker\u00e4t\u00e4 radioaktiivisia aineita sis\u00e4lt\u00e4vi\u00e4 aerosolihiukkasia.\nTutkielmassa tehtiin kirjallisuuskatsaus s\u00e4teilyvaaratilanteissa syntyvist\u00e4 radioaktiivisia aineita sis\u00e4lt\u00e4vist\u00e4 aerosolihiukkasista ja niiden ominaisuuksista. Lis\u00e4ksi tutustuttiin radonin ja sen hajoamistuotteiden ominaisuuksiin. Kokeellisessa osiossa radonilla ja sen hajoamistuotteilla simuloitiin s\u00e4teilyvaaratilanteissa sis\u00e4ilmaan kulkeutuvia radioaktiivisia aineita. Mittauskampanjassa tutkittiin kahden kaupallisen siirrett\u00e4v\u00e4n ilmanpuhdistimen, HEPA-suodattimeen perustuvan Electrolux EAP300 ja s\u00e4hk\u00f6staattisen Elixair E400, kyky\u00e4 ker\u00e4t\u00e4 radonia ja sen hajoamistuotteita.\nIlmanpuhdistimet ker\u00e4siv\u00e4t tehokkaasti radonin kiinnittyneit\u00e4 hajoamistuotteita, joiden hajoamistuotepitoisuus sis\u00e4ilmassa laski kertaluokalla 100 minuutissa Electrolux EAP300-ilmanpuhdistimella ja 160 minuutissa Elixair E400-ilmanpuhdistimella. Ilmanpuhdistimet eiv\u00e4t ker\u00e4nneet kiinnittym\u00e4tt\u00f6mi\u00e4 hajoamistuotteita tai radonia. Tulosten perusteella sis\u00e4lle suojauduttaessa ilmanpuhdistimet ker\u00e4isiv\u00e4t tehokkaasti radioaktiivisia aineita sis\u00e4lt\u00e4vi\u00e4 akkumulaatiomoodin aerosolihiukkasia ja v\u00e4hent\u00e4isiv\u00e4t hengityksen kautta niist\u00e4 saatavaa efektiivist\u00e4 s\u00e4teilyannosta. Sheltering indoors is performed to decrease internal and external dose while a plume passes through an area. Despite shutting off and sealing all ventilation while sheltering indoors, radioactive substances will seep into indoor air. In this master\u2019s thesis, portable commercially available air purifiers were studied as collectors of\naerosol particles containing radioactive substances.\nIn this thesis, a literature review on the properties of aerosol particles containing radioactive substances created during a radiation hazard situation has been conducted. The properties of radon and radon progeny were also studied. In the experimental part, radon and radon progeny were used to simulate radioactive substances carried into indoor air during a radiation hazard situation. In the measurement campaign, the ability to collect radon and radon progeny using two portable commercially available air purifiers, Electrolux EAP300 employing a HEPA filter and Elixair E400 electrostatic purifier, was studied.\nThe air purifiers collected effectively attached radon progeny as their activity concentration was found to decrease by an order of magnitude in 100 minutes with the Electrolux EAP300 and in 160 minutes with the Elixair E400. The air purifiers didn\u2019t collect the unattached radon progeny or radon. Based on the results, portable commercial air purifiers would be effective at collecting accumulation mode aerosol particles containing radioactive substances while sheltering indoors and would decrease the effective internal inhaled dose from these particles.
