Puutiainen tarvitsee veriaterian kussakin elämänkierron vaiheessa (toukka, nymfi ja aikuinen naaras) ja pääsääntöisesti suuret nisäkkäät mahdollistavat aikuisten naaraiden lisääntymisen. Siitä huolimatta yhteys suurten nisäkkäiden runsauden ja puutiaisen runsauden välillä ei ole selvä. Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli selvittää, kuinka Suomessa yleisesti esiintyvät hirvieläimet, metsäkauris (Capreolus capreolus), valkohäntäkauris (Odocoileus virginianus) ja hirvi (Alces alces) vaikuttavat puutiaisten runsauteen. Oletuksena oli, että hirvieläinten ja puutiaisten runsauden välillä on positiivinen yhteys. Hirvieläinten runsautta arvioitiin jätöslaskennoilla ja riistakameroilla. Puutiaisia kerättiin lakanapyynnillä. Työ toteutettiin Porvoon saaristossa maastokausina 2019–2021. Nymfejä kerättiin huomattavasti vähemmän, jos alueella ei havaittu lainkaan kauriita, mutta kauriiden korkeampi runsaus ei merkitsevästi nostanut kerättyjen nymfien lukumääriä alueilla, joilla kauriita oli. Alueella vähälukuisena esiintyvän hirven läsnäololla ei havaittu olevan merkitystä puutiaisten runsaudelle. Työ osoittaa, että kaurislajien läsnäololla oli merkitsevä positiivinen yhteys puutiaisnymfien runsauteen. Vaikka metsä- ja valkohäntäkauriit ovat tärkeitä isäntäeläimiä puutiaisille käytetyllä tutkimusalueella, ei puutiaisten runsaus ollut suorassa suhteessa kauriiden arvioituun runsauteen. Siten, jotta puutiaisen runsautta voisi ennustaa, todennäköisesti myös muiden niiden elämään vaikuttavien tekijöiden, kuten ilmaston, mikroilmaston ja muiden isäntien, vaikutus tulisi huomioida. Sheep tick (Ixodes ricinus) is a vector of several pathogens, including borrelia bacteria and tick-borne encephalitis virus. Recently, ticks and tick-borne diseases have become more common. Ticks need a blood meal at each stage of their life cycle (larva, nymph, and adult female), and large mammals provide sufficient blood meals for adult females. Nevertheless, the relationship between the availability of large mammals and the questing tick density is not clear. The aim of the thesis was to find out how cervids common in Finland, roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), white tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and moose (Alces alces), affect the abundance of ticks. The hypothesis was that there is a positive association between the abundances of cervids and ticks. The abundance of cervids was assessed with dung counts and camera traps. Ticks were collected by blanket-dragging. The work was carried out in the Porvoo archipelago in the summer months of 2019–2021. Significantly fewer nymphs were observed if deer were absent in the study site, but the higher abundance of deer did not increase the numbers of detected nymphs in areas where deer were present. The presence of moose, which were not very common in the area, did not significantly affect tick abundance. This work indicates that the presence of deer had a significant positive association with the number of nymphal ticks. Even though roe deer and white-tailed deer are important hosts for ticks in the study area, the abundance of ticks was not directly proportional to the estimated abundance of deer. Other factors, such as climate, microclimate and effects of other hosts, should also be taken into account in order to predict the abundance of ticks.
