DNA-molekyylien avulla on mahdollista muodostaa lääkkeiden kuljettimia, jotka kykenevät kiertämään tai korjaamaan muiden kuljettimien yleisiä, epätoivottuja ominaisuuksia, lisäämään lääkkeiden kohdentumista tiettyihin kudoksiin ja vähentämään lääkkeiden epäonnistuneesta kohdentamisesta aiheutuneita sivuvaikutuksia. DNA-nanoteknologiaan ja -origameihin perustuvat sovellukset ovat osoittaneet lukuisia hyödyllisiä, biologisiin ympäristöihin soveltuvia ominaisuuksia, joilla voidaan mahdollisesti ratkaista joitakin lääketieteen ja nykyisten kuljettimien keskeisimpiä ongelmia. Tutkielmassa perehdytään ja analysoidaan tieteenalan kohtaamia merkittävimpiä haasteita ja esitetään mahdollisia ratkaisuja näiden haasteiden ylittämiseksi. This thesis discusses the usage of DNA-origami for efficient and active drug targeting. DNA-nanotechnology utilizes the power of active self-assembly to influence events and reactions happening at the nanoscale. Using DNA-molecules, it is possible to create drug transporting vehicles that prevent the unwanted properties of drugs, increase the amount of drugs that reach the target tissue and reduce the amount of off-target effects. DNA-based transporters have demonstrated some superior properties compared to the existing drug carrier molecules. The most significant challenges and problems of the field are analyzed and discussed in this thesis. Some of the possible solutions to these problems are also introduced.
