Autonomian katsotaan edist\u00e4v\u00e4n elinik\u00e4ist\u00e4 oppimista, parantavan oppimisen laatua ja mahdollistavan oppimista yli luokkahuonerajojen. Autonomiaa on aiemmin m\u00e4\u00e4ritelty yksil\u00f6n ominaisuutena ja kapasiteettina ottaa vastuuta omasta oppimisestaan, mutta nyky\u00e4\u00e4n autonomian voidaan m\u00e4\u00e4ritell\u00e4 olevan vuorovaikutteista ja dynaamista oppijan ja oppimisymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n suhteessa toisiinsa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa autonomia ymm\u00e4rret\u00e4\u00e4n kokonaisuutena, johon vaikuttavat sek\u00e4 yksil\u00f6lliset ett\u00e4 vuorovaikutukselliset piirteet. Opettajan roolin tiedet\u00e4\u00e4n olevan merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 oppilaan autonomian tukemisessa, sill\u00e4 opettajan omat k\u00e4sitykset vaikuttavat siihen, miten autonomia ymm\u00e4rret\u00e4\u00e4n ja miten sit\u00e4 edistet\u00e4\u00e4n luokassa. Autonomia ja informaali oppiminen ovat l\u00e4hekk\u00e4isi\u00e4 aiheita, sill\u00e4 Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteissa (2014) todetaan, ett\u00e4 oppilaat oppivat englantia eneneviss\u00e4 m\u00e4\u00e4rin vapaa-ajallaan ja t\u00e4m\u00e4 itsen\u00e4inen oppiminen tulisi ottaa huomioon opetuksessa. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa haluttiin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 yl\u00e4kouluik\u00e4isten, eli teini-ik\u00e4isten, kokemuksia, sill\u00e4 teini-ik\u00e4isist\u00e4 ei ole tehty paljon tutkimusta kieltenoppijoina. Suomen kontekstissa autonomiaa ei ole juurikaan tutkittu suhteessa englannin oppimisen kokemuksiin. \n\nT\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa haluttiin selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 yl\u00e4kouluik\u00e4isten kokemuksia autonomiasta englannin opiskelussa ja millaista tukea he saavat autonomiseen oppimiseensa koulussa ja vapaa-ajalla. Tutkimus toteutettiin kyselytutkimuksena ja siihen vastasi 85 oppilasta kahdesta suomalaisesta koulusta. Kyselyyn vastasi yksi seitsem\u00e4s luokka, kaksi kahdeksasluokkaa ja kaksi yhdeks\u00e4sluokkaa. Kyselyss\u00e4 oli suljettuja v\u00e4itt\u00e4mi\u00e4 ja avoimia kysymyksi\u00e4 liittyen oppilaiden kokemuksiin autonomiasta ja englannin opiskelusta, englannin tunteihin, opettajan tukeen sek\u00e4 informaaliin oppimiseen. Kysely toteutettiin tammikuussa ja helmikuussa 2022. Tuloksista selvisi, ett\u00e4 oppilaat ovat yleisesti ottaen todella autonomisia englannin oppijoita suhteessa tavoitteellisuuteen, oman oppimisen vaikuttamiseen, metakognitiivisiin kykyihin sek\u00e4 vapaa-ajan aktiivisuuteen. P\u00e4\u00e4osin opettajan tuki oli koettu positiiviseksi. Kuitenkin oppilaat kokivat, ett\u00e4 opettajan tuki vapaa-ajan oppimiseen oli v\u00e4h\u00e4isemp\u00e4\u00e4, kuin kouluun ja opintoihin liittyv\u00e4\u00e4n tukeen. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tuloksia voidaan hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 tietoisuutta informaalista oppimisesta ja sen tukemisesta, sill\u00e4 tulosten perusteella oppilaat hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4v\u00e4t aktiivisesti vapaa-ajan resursseja kielen oppimiseen.
