Nyky\u00e4\u00e4n kirjallisuus n\u00e4kyy AIPE:n S2-oppim\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n sis\u00e4ll\u00f6iss\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n kuin ennen, mutta kaunokirjallisuuden k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 osana aikuisten S2-opetusta on Suomessa viel\u00e4 melko harvinaista (ks. Kastari 2019: 346). Tutkimukseni aineisto koostuu kahdesta tallennetusta ryhm\u00e4haastattelusta ja yhdest\u00e4 ryhm\u00e4keskustelusta sek\u00e4 kahdesta Tuija Takalan novellista (J\u00e4\u00e4 ja Sauna 2018). Haastattelu- ja keskusteluaineiston ker\u00e4sin Teamsissa toteuttamassani opetuskokeilussa, jossa kuusi osallistujaa luki itsen\u00e4isesti J\u00e4\u00e4-novellin ja ryhm\u00e4ss\u00e4 Sauna-novellin. Kummankin lukukerran j\u00e4lkeen keskustelimme luetusta. Tutkimuskysymykseni ovat: 1) Mit\u00e4 S2-oppijat lukevat omalla kielell\u00e4\u00e4n ja suomeksi? 2) Miten S2-oppijat kokevat selkokielisten novellien lukemisen? ja 3) Mill\u00e4 tavoin S2-oppijoiden havainnot novelleista kytkeytyv\u00e4t Selkomittarin (Selkokeskus 2018) kirjoitetun selkokielen kriteereihin? Aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isell\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysilla nostan aineistoa l\u00e4hilukemalla aineistosta esiin tutkimuskysymysteni n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta kiinnostavia asioita. Kollektiivisen ymm\u00e4rryksen rakentumista tarkastelen fokusryhm\u00e4analyysin keinoin (ks. Markov\u00e1 ym. 2007). Osallistujien havaintoja novelliteksteist\u00e4 suhteutan niihin havaintoihin, joita tekstintutkimuksen keinoin eli k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 Selkomittaria (Selkokeskus 2018) soveltaen tein itse teksteist\u00e4. Tutkimukseni osoitti, ett\u00e4 osallistujat lukivat omalla kielell\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n omaehtoisesti kuin suomeksi. Suomen kielell\u00e4 he lukivat tekstej\u00e4, jotka olivat hy\u00f6dyllisi\u00e4 arjessa selviytymiselle: esimerkiksi Kelan papereita, uutisia ja ty\u00f6j\u00e4rjestyst\u00e4. Selkokielisi\u00e4 novelleja lukiessaan osallistujat kiinnittiv\u00e4t huomiota sek\u00e4 helppoihin ett\u00e4 vaikeisiin asioihin. Novelleissa helppoja olivat tuttu sanasto, lyhyet sanat, lyhyet lauseet, lyhyet kappaleet ja se, ett\u00e4 lauseet ja virkkeet olivat kappaleissa ja j\u00e4rjestyksess\u00e4. Vaikeita taas olivat uudet tuntemattomat sanat, taivutetut sananmuodot ja kuvailevat ilmaukset. Itsen\u00e4isesti luettaessa ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 luetusta rakennettiin paljolti Googlen k\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00e4j\u00e4n avulla. Kaikki osallistujat pitiv\u00e4t yhdess\u00e4 lukemista parempana tapana lukea novellia. Kollektiivista ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 \nrakennettiin selitt\u00e4misen, materiaalisen oikea-aikaisen tuen, neuvomisen, muiden kielten k\u00e4yt\u00f6n, kokemukseen pohjautuvan tiedon jakamisen, kysymisen, toistamisen, tarkistamisen ja yhdess\u00e4 pohtimisen avulla. Yhdess\u00e4 luetusta keskusteleminen tarjosi hyvin tukea, ja novellien ymm\u00e4rt\u00e4minen vaikuttaakin olevan suurilta osin yhteisty\u00f6t\u00e4 ainakin silloin, kun siihen annetaan mahdollisuus (ks. Vaarala 2009: 260). Toisella kielell\u00e4 lukeminen eroaa ensikielell\u00e4 lukemisesta, ja olisikin t\u00e4rke\u00e4\u00e4, ett\u00e4 luettava teksti ei ole liian vaikeaa. Selkokielinen teksti tukee toisella kielell\u00e4 lukemista, sill\u00e4 se on rakenteeltaan ja sanastoltaan helpompaa ja pituudeltaan lyhyemp\u00e4\u00e4 kuin yleiskielinen teksti (ks. M\u00e4nnikk\u00f6lahti 2022a; Selkokeskus 2020: 3).", "language": "fi", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.abstract", "value": "In my research I put into practice a teaching experiment in which I introduced easy language fiction into Finnish as a second language (S2) in the final stages of adult basic education (AIPE). Nowadays, literature is more visible part in the contents of S2 curriculum of AIPE than before, but the use of fiction as part of adult S2 teaching is still quite rare in Finland (see Kastari 2019: 346). The material of my research consists of two recorded group interviews and one group discussion, as well as two short stories by Tuija Takala (J\u00e4\u00e4 and Sauna 2018). I collected the interview and discussion material in a teaching experiment I conducted at Teams, where six participants read short story J\u00e4\u00e4 independently and short story Sauna in the group. After each reading, we discussed what was read. My research questions are: 1) What do S2 learners read in their own language and in Finnish? 2) How do S2 learners experience reading short stories? and 3) In what ways S2 learners\u2019 perceptions of short stories relate to the criteria for easy language written by Selkomittari (Selkokeskus 2018)? With material-based content analysis, I bring up the material by close reading the material from the perspective of my research questions. I examine the construction of collective understanding through focus group analysis (see Markov\u00e1 et al. 2007). I relate the participants\u2019 observations of the short stories to the observations I made from the texts by means of textual research, ie by practically applying the Selkomittari (Selkokeskus 2018). My research showed that participants read more in their own language than in Finnish. In Finnish, they read texts that were useful for everyday survival: papers from Kela, news and timetable, for example. When reading easy language short stories, participants paid attention to both easy and difficult things. In the short stories, the familiar vocabulary, short words, short sentences, short paragraphs and the fact that the clauses and sentences were in paragraphs and in order were easy. New unfamiliar words, inflected word forms and descriptive expressions were difficult. When reading on their own, reading comprehension was built largely with the help of Google Translator. All participants considered reading together a better way to read the short story. Collective understanding was built through explaining, material scaffolding, counseling, use of other languages, sharing experimental information, asking, repeating, reviewing and reflecting together. Discussing what was read together provided good support, and understanding short stories seems to be largely collaborative, at least when given the opportunity (see Vaarala 2009: 260). Reading in a second language is different from reading in a first language, and it would be important that the text you read is not too difficult.
