Tässä tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, kuinka biologiaa ja kemiaa integroidaan suomalaisissa yläkouluissa ja lukioissa, ja millaisia esteitä integraatiolle käytännössä on. Lisäksi selvitettiin erilaisten taustatekijöiden ja sen, kuinka tärkeäksi biologiaa opettavat aineenopettajat kokevat kemian biologialle ja sen opettamiselle, välistä yhteyttä. Aineisto kerättiin haastattelemalla kymmentä yläkoulussa ja/tai lukiossa biologiaa opettavaa aineenopettajaa. Haastattelutallenteiden litteroinnista saatu aineisto analysoitiin sisällönanalyysin keinoin sekä tilastollisin menetelmin. Pääsääntöisesti opettajat olivat sitä mieltä, että kemia liittyy tieteenalana biologiaan, mutta koulun opetuksessa tätä yhteyttä ei nähty niin merkittävänä. Positiivinen yhteys havaittiin sen välillä, kuinka paljon opettajat pitivät kemiasta ja miten merkittäväksi he kokivat biologian ja kemian tieteenalojen välisen yhteyden. Käytännössä biologian ja kemian integroinnin määrä ja tavat vaihtelivat opettajasta ja koulusta riippuen. Opettajat näkivät biologian ja kemian integraatiossa monia hyötyjä sekä oppilaiden ja opiskelijoiden että opettajien näkökulmasta. Tulosten perusteella kemian hyödyntäminen biologiassa sekä oppiaineiden välisen integraation edistäminen vaatisi pääasiassa biologiaa opettavien aineenopettajien kemian osaamisen kehittämistä, opetuksen suunnitteluajan lisäämistä sekä biologian ja kemian opettajien välisen yhteistyön mahdollistamista. Finnish school curriculums are divided into subjects. This may lead to incoherent picture of topics thought in schools. Integrating subjects could provide a broader view. This study attempts to understand how biology and chemistry are being integrated in Finnish comprehensive schools and upper secondary schools, and which obstacles exist for profound integration of these subjects. Simultaneously, it was studied how teacher’s background affects the perception of importance of chemistry in biology and biology education. In this study, ten upper comprehensive school and/or upper secondary school biology teachers were interviewed. Transcriptions gotten from interview recordings were analyzed via content analysis and statistical methods. The research findings indicate that the integration between biology and chemistry needs to be actively supported. Most teachers believed that chemistry plays a significant part in biology but the relationship was not seen that important in biology taught in schools. Positive correlation was observed between how much biology teachers liked chemistry and how significant they thought the connection between chemistry and biology are as branches of science. In practice, the amount and ways of integration between biology and chemistry varied depending on teacher and school. Teachers recognized many benefits in integration of subjects both from pupils ́ and students ́ as well as teachers ́ points of view. According to the results in this study if chemistry is wanted to be utilized in biology teaching more, there is a need to increase and support biology teachers’ chemistry knowledge and skills. Also, enabling co-operation between biology and chemistry teachers in schools is an important factor in promoting the integration between the subjects on a daily basis in education and curriculum development.
