Tavoitteena oli lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 siit\u00e4, toimiiko koululiikunta itsetunnon heikent\u00e4j\u00e4n\u00e4 vai vahvistajana, mutta my\u00f6s siit\u00e4, mitk\u00e4 tekij\u00e4t koululiikunnassa vaikuttivat erityisesti itsetunnon rakentumiseen. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadullinen, tarkemmin narratiivinen ja sen aineisto koostuu kuuden 1980-, 1990- ja 2000-luvulla perusopetuksessa olleen aikuisen tarinasta, joissa he muistelevat henkil\u00f6kohtaisia koululiikuntakokemuksiaan itsetunnon n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Tarinat analysoitiin aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6ist\u00e4 sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysia k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en, induktiivisesti edeten. \nPerusopetuksen koululiikuntakokemukset olivat itsetunnon kannalta merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4. Liikuntatunneilta saadut hyv\u00e4t kokemukset vahvistivat oppilaiden itsetuntoa, kun taas negatiiviset kokemukset olivat itsetunnon kannalta haitallisia. Aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin pohjalta tutkimuksessa korostui erityisesti nelj\u00e4 itsetuntotekij\u00e4\u00e4: turvallisuuden tunne, p\u00e4tevyyden kokemukset, liikunnanopettajan toiminta ja koululiikunnan ulkopuoliset itsetuntokokemukset. \nTurvallisuuden tunteeseen liittyen merkitt\u00e4vi\u00e4 tekij\u00f6it\u00e4 olivat turvallisen liikuntailmapiirin luominen, ep\u00e4onnistumisten salliminen ja joko itse liikuntasuoritukseen tai ulkoisiin tekij\u00f6ihin liittyv\u00e4 opettaja- tai vertaisarvostelu. P\u00e4tevyyden kokemuksissa olennaiseksi tekij\u00e4ksi nousi mahdollisuus omantasoiseen tekemiseen joko fyysisest\u00e4 tai taidollisesta n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Liikunnanopettajan toiminnassa olennaisia asioita olivat palautteen antoon, arviointiin, tasa-arvoon ja yleiseen kasvattajuuteen liittyv\u00e4t kysymykset. Koulun ulkopuolisilla tekij\u00f6ill\u00e4, kuten itsetuntoa vahvistavalla kasvatuksella tai omalla urheiluharrastuksella oli my\u00f6s merkityst\u00e4 itsetunnon positiivisen rakentumisen kannalta.\nTutkimuksen perusteella perusopetuksen liikuntatunneilla opettajan on mahdollista tehd\u00e4 itsetuntoa vahvistavia valintoja. The aim was to increase the understanding of whether school exercise acts as a weakener or a strengthening of self-esteem, but also about what factors in school exercise contributed to the building of self-esteem in particular. The study is qualitative, more closely narrative, and its material consists of the stories of six adults in primary school in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s, in which they recall their personal physical education experiences from a self-esteem perspective. The stories were analyzed using data-driven content analysis, proceeding inductively. \n\nThe physical education experiences in primary education were significant in terms of self-esteem. Good experiences from physical education classes strengthened students \u2019self-esteem, while negative experiences were detrimental to self-esteem. Based on the data-driven content analysis, the study highlighted four factors of self-esteem in particular: a sense of security, experiences of competence, the activities of a physical education teacher, and self-esteem experiences outside of physical education.\n\nSignificant factors related to the sense of security included creating a safe physical education atmosphere, allowing for failures, and teacher or peer review related to either exercise performance itself or external factors. An essential factor in the experience of competence became the possibility to do physical exercises on one`s own level, either from physical or skill point of view. Giving feedback, evaluation, equality and general education skills were relevant issues in the actions of a physical education teacher. Out-of-school factors, such as restorative self-esteem education or one`s own sport hobby, also played role in the positive building of self- esteem.\n\nBased on the research, it is possible for a teacher to make self-esteem-enhancing choices during primary school physical education classes.
