T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometrilla suoritetun yksitt\u00e4isen korkeaintensiteettisen intervalliharjoituksen (HIIT) akuutteja vaikutuksia aivojen lepoaktiivisuuteen 16-17-vuotiailla nuorilla (n=6). Tarkastelun kohteiksi valittiin alfan ja betan taajuuskaistojen huipputaajuudet. Tutkittavat osallistuivat kahteen MEG-mittaukseen: HIIT-mittaukseen ja kontrollimittaukseen. Mittausten j\u00e4rjestys vaihteli siten, ett\u00e4 joka toinen tutkittava tuli ensin HIIT-mittaukseen ja joka toinen kontrollimittaukseen. Molemmat MEG-mittaukset alkoivat aivojen lepoaktiivisuuden mittauksella ja Stroop-teht\u00e4v\u00e4ll\u00e4. Stroop-teht\u00e4v\u00e4 on yleisesti k\u00e4ytetty kognitiivinen testimenetelm\u00e4, jolla mita-taan automatisoituneen toiminnan ja ep\u00e4olennaisten \u00e4rsykkeiden inhibitiota. HIIT-mittauksessa tutkittava suoritti polkupy\u00f6r\u00e4ergometrilla 20 minuutin korkeaintensiteettisen intervalliharjoituksen ja kontrollimittauksessa tutkittava istui vastaavan ajan paikoillaan. T\u00e4m\u00e4n j\u00e4lkeen toistettiin aivojen lepoaktiivisuuden mittaus sek\u00e4 Stroop-teht\u00e4v\u00e4 ja mitattiin lopuksi viel\u00e4 kertaalleen aivojen lepoaktiivisuus. Analyysivaiheessa laskettiin lepomittausten spektrit ennalta m\u00e4\u00e4riteltyjen sensoritason kanavakeskiarvojen mukaisesti. Lis\u00e4ksi kokeiltiin soveltaa Fourier-ICA:a huipputaajuuden muutosten spatiaalisten erojen selvitt\u00e4miseksi. Tuloksia tarkasteltiin sek\u00e4 ryhm\u00e4 ett\u00e4 yksil\u00f6tasolla. Alfan osalta havaittiin tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4 huipputaajuuden siirtym\u00e4 korkeammille taajuuksille HIIT:in seurauksena yhdess\u00e4 sensomotoriselle alueelle sijoittuvassa ICA-komponentissa. Yksil\u00f6tason tarkastelussa havaittiin, ett\u00e4 huipputaajuuden muutokset olivat yleisesti ottaen yksil\u00f6llisi\u00e4, lyhytkestoisia ja aluespesifisi\u00e4. Kahdella tutkittavalla alfan huipputaajuus laski aluespesifisesti matalammille taajuuksille HIIT:in seurauksena, kun muilla tutkittavilla huipputaajuus p\u00e4\u00e4s\u00e4\u00e4nt\u00f6isesti nousi kaikilla alueilla. HIIT-mittauksessa havaittua huipputaajuuden nousua korkeammille taajuuksille ei ollut havaittavissa kontrollimittauksessa. Betan huipputaajuuden muutoksia tarkasteltiin ainoastaan kahden tutkittavan osalta, joten tilastollista tarkastelua ei betan osalta tehty. Molemmilla tutkittavilla betan huipputaajuus nousi HIIT:in seurauksena. Muutokset olivat selkeimmin n\u00e4ht\u00e4viss\u00e4 sensomotorisella alueella ollen yksil\u00f6tasolla noin kaksinkertaiset alfan huipputaajuuden muutoksiin verrattuna. Tulosten perusteella yksitt\u00e4inen korkeaintensiteettinen intervalliharjoitus vaikuttaa yksil\u00f6llisesti, lyhytaikaisesti ja aluespesifisesti sek\u00e4 alfan ett\u00e4 betan huipputaajuuksiin. The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of a single bout of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) exercise on resting state of brain in adolescents aged 16-17 years (N=6). The focus of this study was on individual alpha and beta peak frequencies. The subjects completed two MEG measurements, in such way that every other subject participated first in a HIIT measurement and every other in a control measurement. Both of the MEG measurements started with a resting state measurement and a Stroop task. The Stroop task is widely used cognitive test method, which measures inhibition of automated action and irrelevant stimuli. In the HIIT measurement subjects completed a 20-minute high-intensity interval protocol with a bicycle ergometer and in the control measurement subjects sat still for 20 minutes instead of the exercise. After that the resting state measurement and the Stroop task were repeated and finally resting state activity was measured again in both of the MEG measurements. In analysis phase, resting state spectra were calculated in predefined sensory channel clusters. Additionally, group level Fourier ICA (independent component analysis) was experimentally applied to examine spatial differences of peak frequency changes more in detail. The results were inspected at both individual and group level. A statistically significant shift in alpha peak frequency to higher frequencies was observed as a result of the HIIT protocol in one ICA component located in the sensorimotor area. At the individual level, peak frequency changes were broadly individual, short-term and brain region specific. The alpha peak frequency of two subjects shifted to lower frequencies on a region specific basis, while the alpha peak frequency of other subjects generally increased in all regions as a result of the HIIT protocol. Beta peak frequency changes were inspected only for two subjects, so the statistical analysis was not performed. Beta peak frequency increased as a result of the HIIT protocol for both of the subjects. Changes were most noticeable in sensorimotor area being at the individual level approximately twice as large as alpha peak frequency changes. Alpha and beta peak frequency shifts to higher frequencies detected in the HIIT measurement were not detected in the control measurement. On the grounds of this study, a single bout of high-intensity interval exercise has individual, short-term and brain region specific effects on alpha and beta peak frequencies.
