Oppilaiden suoriutumista ja eritrealaisten opettajien ty\u00f6skentely\u00e4 on tutkittu aiemmin, mutta lasten ja heid\u00e4n vanhempiensa k\u00e4sityksi\u00e4 heikosti suoriutumisesta on tutkittu niukasti. Min\u00e4k\u00e4sitys ja koulunk\u00e4ynnin tuki ovat positiivisesti yhteydess\u00e4 oppimistuloksiin ja hyvinvointiin. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa on trianguloitu vanhempien ja lasten n\u00e4kemyksi\u00e4 heikosti suoriutumisesta ja koulunk\u00e4ynnin tuesta kotona. Aineisto koostuu viiden viidesluokkalaisen ja viiden vanhemman haastatteluista sek\u00e4 lasten piirrustuksista. Haastattelut on analysoitu induktiivisesti laadullisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin menetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4. Tutkimus suoritettiin yhteisty\u00f6ss\u00e4 Asmara College of Educationin kanssa asmaralaisessa alakoulussa. \nLasten k\u00e4sitykset omasta suoriutumisesta perustuivat pitk\u00e4lti oman kyvyn arvioinnista suhteessa muihin viidesluokkalaisiin. Vanhemmat olivat huolestuneempia lastensa oppimistuloksista kuin lapset. Sek\u00e4 lapset ett\u00e4 vanhemmat pitiv\u00e4t viidesluokkalaisia sitoutuneina koulunk\u00e4yntiin, ja toivat esiin koulunk\u00e4ynnin t\u00e4rke\u00e4n merkityksen lapsen tulevaisuudenn\u00e4kymien kannalta. Vanhemmat luottivat yhteis\u00f6n tukeen, jos he kokivat olevansa itse kykenem\u00e4tt\u00f6mi\u00e4 tukemaan lastaan. Heikoimmaksi koulunk\u00e4ynnin tukea kotona arvioivat vanhemmat, joiden yhteis\u00f6iss\u00e4 ei ollut ihmisi\u00e4, jotka voisivat tukea heid\u00e4n lastansa. Although some research is done about Eritrean teachers\u00b4 work and student\u00b4s learning out-comes, little is known about children\u00b4s and their parents\u00b4 perceptions of low achievement. Research suggests that positive self-perception and support at home reinforces academic achievement and well-being. This research fills a gap in the study of low achievement by triangulating the parents and children\u00b4s perceptions. The data consists of children\u00b4s drawings and interviews of five fifth-graders and five parents. All interviews were analyzed using inductive content analysis. The study was conducted in collaboration with Asmara College of Education and an elementary school in Asmara. \nChildren\u00b4s perceptions of their own academic achievement were mainly based on reflections of peers\u00b4 achievement. Perceptions of academic achievement relied on comparisons to peers. Parents expressed more concern for achievement levels than the children. Both children and parents considered the children to be engaged in their learning and saw education as vital for positive life outcomes. Parents rely on community when unable to support their children themselves. Descriptions by parents living in communities with no people who were able to support their children were most grim.
