Radioisotooppeja voidaan tuottaa niin hiukkaskiihdyttimillä kuin ydinreaktoreissakin. Lisäksi tietyillä generaattorimenetelmillä voidaan itse käyttöpaikalla tuottaa lyhytikäisiä isotooppeja, jotka ovat pitkäikäisten isotooppien hajoamistuotteita. Joitain isotooppeja voidaan hyödyntää sellaisenaan, mutta usein niitä tarvitsee jatkojalostaa liittämällä biologisiin tai kemiallisiin yhdisteisiin. Keskeisiä haasteita ja menetelmiä kiihdytintuotannossa käydään läpi tarkemmin fluori-18, jodi-123 ja aktinium-225 isotoopeille. This master’s thesis talks about radioisotope production, its challenges and the introduction of nuclear medicine purpose of use. Basic principles and concepts for safe and appropriate production and use of radioisotopes are gone through. Radioisotopes can be produced in particle accelerators and nuclear reactors. Also generator systems can be used at the site of use to produce short lived radionuclides from their parent nuclides. Some isotopes can be used as is, but most need to be attached to other molecules, called vectors. Essential challenges and methods for accelerator production are undergone regarding fluorine-18, iodine-123 and actinium-225 isotopes.
