Tutkielma tarkastelee ensin IoT:n ja terveydenhuollon terminologiaa ja tämänhetkistä tilaa sekä terveydenhuollon tarvetta muutoksille, minkä jälkeen vastataan tutkimuskysymyksiin: mitä uusia mahdollisuuksia IoT tarjoaa terveydenhuollolle ja mitä haasteita liittyy IoT:n hyödyntämiseen terveydenhuollossa. IoT:n tarjoamia uusia mahdollisuuksia ovat tutkimuksen mukaan muun muassa uudet sovellukset ja palvelut, tehokkuuden lisääminen terveyden ja kroonisten sairauksien seurannassa sekä vanhusten hoidossa, terveydenhuollon kustannusten ja laitteiden häiriöaikojen vähentäminen, sekä tehokkaampi tilastojen koonti ja vaarallisten käyttäytymispoikkeamien esiasteiden tunnistaminen. IoT:n terveydenhuollossa hyödyntämiseen liittyviä haasteita puolestaan ovat ongelmat liittyen muun muassa standardointiin, teknologian siirtymiseen, epäyhtenäisiin laitteisiin, uusien sairauksien tutkimisen tarpeeseen, riittävään liikkuvuuteen, vähentyneeseen kontaktiin potilaiden ja hoitohenkilökunnan välillä, käyttöönottoon sekä tärkeimpänä tietosuojaan ja yksityisyyteen. Tutkimuksessa päädyttiin johtopäätökseen, että aiheeseen liittyvät haasteet vaativat lisätutkimusta. Tämä tutkimus on hyödyllinen niille, jotka ovat kiinnostuneet IoT:n terveydenhuollossa hyödyntämisen nykytilasta, sekä etenkin tulevaisuudesta, mahdollisuuksista ja haasteista. This bachelor’s thesis fulfilled as a literature review researches the utilizing of IoT in health care. The topic is suitable for the moment and the source material is almost entirely from 2010s. The thesis first surveys the terminology and current state of IoT and health care, and the need for changes in health care sector, and then answers to the research questions: what new opportunities does IoT offer for health care and what challenges are involved in utilizing IoT in health care. The new opportunities offered by IoT include, among other things, new applications and services, increasing efficiency in the monitoring of individuals health and chronic diseases as well as in the care of the elderly, reducing the number of downtimes as well as the cost of health care, and more efficient compilation of statistics and identification of precursors of dangerous behavioral anomalies. The challenges associated with the use of IoT in healthcare include problems related to, among other things, standardization, technology transition, heterogeneous devices, the need to study new diseases, sufficient mobility, reduced contact between patients and nursing staff, implementation, and, above all, security and privacy issues. It was also concluded that the related challenges require further research. This research is useful for those interested in the current state of utilization of IoT in healthcare, and especially in the future, opportunities and challenges.
