Vetyperoksidi reagoi raudan kanssa muodostaen hydroksyyliradikaaleja, jotka voivat hajottaa DOM:a bakteereille sopiviksi substraateiksi. Tässä pro gradu - tutkielmassa selvitettiin raudan vaikutusta DOM:n hajoamisessa hyödyntäen superoksidin lähteenä KO2-liuosta bakteerien sijasta. Reaktiomekanismia tutkittiin seuraamalla hydroksyyliradikaalien muodostumista käyttämällä kumariinia koettimena. DOM:n hajoamista tarkasteltiin fluoresenssi- ja absorbanssimittauksilla. Hydroksyyliradikaalien muodostuminen oli vähäistä liuoksissa, jotka sisälsivät vain DOM:a tai joihin lisättiin vain rautaa tai superoksidia. Hydroksyyliradikaaleja muodostui sekä rautaa että superoksidia sisältävissä liuoksissa. Liuenneesta orgaanisesta aineesta löydettiin neljä fluoresoivaa komponenttia: kaksi humus- ja yksi proteiinialueen komponentti sekä 7-hydroksikumariini, joka on kumariinin ja hydroksyyliradikaalin välisen reaktion reaktiotuote. Ilman superoksidia DOM:n hajoamista ei tapahtunut lainkaan, mutta superoksidin ja varsinkin vielä raudan läsnä ollessa hajoaminen oli huomattavaa. Tämän perusteella tutkitulla reaktioreitillä voi olla DOM:n hajoamista edistävä vaikutus. Recently interactions between the dissolved organic matter (DOM) and iron have attracted increased attention. Especially the effect of iron on the degradation of DOM is not well-known. It has been shown that some bacteria can produce extracellular superoxide, which forms hydrogen peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide can react with iron and produce hydroxyl radicals that degrade humic-like DOM into suitable substrates for bacteria. In this master thesis the degradation of DOM-iron associations were assessed by using KO2-solution as the source of superoxide instead of bacteria. The reaction mechanism was examined by following the formation of hydroxyl radicals using coumarin as a probe. The degradation of DOM was studied by fluorescence and absorbance measurements. Yields of hydroxyl radical reactions were low in the experimental treatments that contained DOM alone or with the introductions of iron or KO2 separately. Hydroxyl radicals were produced in the solutions including both iron and superoxide. DOM included four fluorescent components: two humic-like and one protein-like component and 7-hydroxycoumarin, the product of the reaction between coumarin and hydroxyl radical. Significant degradations of DOM occurred only in solutions containing superoxide, especially combined with iron. Based on these results these reaction routes can enhance the degradation of DOM.
