The study was qualitative interview study. Open theme interview was the method for collecting the data and analysis was carried out using content analysis. The interviews were conducted between May and September 2015 at interviewees home or at work. Twelve parents participated, ten women and two men. They were from Metropolitan area, Tavastia, Central Finland and North Savonia. \nThe results of this study show that 60 % of the families manage to schedule family meals between their work and hobbies. Seven of the parents reported to have family meals at least four times a week. These parents described dining together as a positive and easygoing event that they made room for in the family`s weekly schedule. Five of the parents told that they do not have family meals during the weekdays, but less frequent special meals for the family. These parents reported that the scheduling of family meals between work and hobbies, is challenging or they did not think dining together was important. Home was the most common place for meals and the food served at the meal was homemade nearly without exception. The parents recognized meanings related to mental, physical and social health. Family meals were associated with nice time together as a family and healthy nutrition. By contrast parents did not associate family meals with health determinants such as substance abuse behavior, mental health or success in studies. Most of the parents mention such meanings as a feeling of togetherness, talking together and a shared positive moment. Only few of the parents mentioned the feelings of security or increased self-discipline from set mealtimes, or opportunity to keep track of young people\u00b4s development or to convey memories and history to the next generation. Two of the parents mentioned relaying values and habits, such as for example table manners to the young people. \nAccording to this study many parents do not realize all the positive effects of dining together. It looks like we should increase our understanding of the family meal\u00b4s significance. It would improve the well-being of young people and their family. At the level of society, family meals could have an impact on health behaviors, mental health and feelings of loneliness. In addition, these experiences are often associated with those young people who are down and out.", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "abstract", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Submitted by Miia Hakanen (mihakane@jyu.fi) on 2019-01-04T08:27:54Z\nNo. of bitstreams: 0", "language": "en", "element": "description", "qualifier": "provenance", "schema": "dc"}, {"key": "dc.description.provenance", "value": "Made available in DSpace on 2019-01-04T08:27:54Z (GMT).
