Empirical studies of game-based pedagogy have mostly shown positive effects\non student motivation. Studies have however failed to include theories of motivation research\nand for that reason there is a void in the research field. This thesis studied the effects\nof game-based pedagogy using self-determination theory and goal orientation theory as a\nbackground for intrinsic motivation and engagement. Also possible differences between\ngenders and different age groups were studied using descriptive statistical methods. Research\ndata used in this thesis was gathered from primary and lower secondary school students\n(N = 210) in Helsinki in 2014 with a Likert scale questionnaire. Statistical analysis\nconsisted of descriptive statistics and structural equation models. Relationships between psychological\nneeds, goal orientation, intrinsic motivation and engagement were researched\nwith structural equation models. Descriptive statistics showed high correlations between\npsychological needs and intrinsic motivation. Boys perceived more competence and autonomy\nduring game-based teaching than girls. Older students didn\u2019t enjoy game-based pedagogy\nas much as the younger students, and also perceived amotivation increased amongst\nolder students as theory predicted. Structural equation modeling implied that competence is\nthe most important psychological mediator predicting intrinsic motivation but also autonomy\nand relatedness were needed for engagement. Goal orientations had weak relations to intrin-\niii\nsic motivation but had strong underlying relations with psychological needs. In general students\nperceived game-based pedagogy enjoyable, valuable and useful. My\u00f6s oppilaiden sukupuolen ja i\u00e4n mahdollisia\nvaikutuksia motivaatioon ja kiinnittymiseen tarkasteltiin. Tutkielmassa k\u00e4ytettiin helsinkil\u00e4isiss\u00e4\nala- ja yl\u00e4kouluissa vuonna 2014 ker\u00e4tty\u00e4 Likert-asteikollista kyselyaineistoa (N =\n210). Aineistolle tehtiin muuttujien v\u00e4list\u00e4 kuvailevaa analyysi\u00e4 ja lis\u00e4ksi muuttujien v\u00e4lisi\u00e4\nsuhteita tarkasteltiin rakenneyht\u00e4l\u00f6mallien avulla. Rakenneyht\u00e4l\u00f6malleilla pyrittiin tutkimaan\npsykologisten tarpeiden, tavoiteorientaatioiden, motivaation ja kiinnittymisen suhdetta.\nTutkielman kuvailevassa analyysiss\u00e4 todettiin psykologisista tarpeista kyvykkyyden\nja autonomian olevan t\u00e4rke\u00e4ss\u00e4 roolissa pelipedagogiikassa. Vanhemmat oppilaat eiv\u00e4t kokeneet\npelipedagogiikkaa niin mielenkiintoiseksi ja nautinnolliseksi kuin nuoremmat oppilaat\nja my\u00f6s koettu amotivaatio oli korkeampaa vanhempien oppilaiden keskuudessa. Pojat\nkokivat tilastollisesti merkitsev\u00e4sti tytt\u00f6j\u00e4 enemm\u00e4n kyvykkyytt\u00e4 ja autonomiaa pelipedago-\nii\ngisessa kontekstissa. My\u00f6s rakenneyht\u00e4l\u00f6mallit tukivat oletusta psykologisten tarpeiden t\u00e4rke\u00e4st\u00e4\nroolista sis\u00e4isen motivaation muodostumisessa. Koettu kyvykkyys oli t\u00e4rkein tekij\u00e4\nsis\u00e4isen motivaation muodostumisessa, mik\u00e4 tukee itsem\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4misteoriaa. Kiinnittymisen\nkokemus vaati kaikkien psykologisten tarpeiden tyydyttymist\u00e4. Tavoiteorientaatioteorian\nosa-alueiden osalta suoria selkeit\u00e4 vaikutuksia sis\u00e4iseen motivaation ei l\u00f6ytynyt, mutta varsinkin\noppimisorientaatio korreloi voimakkaasti psykologisten tarpeiden kanssa. Yleisesti\noppilaat kokivat pelipedagogiikan mielekk\u00e4\u00e4n\u00e4, arvokkaana ja hy\u00f6dyllisen\u00e4.
