Nikkeli on bioakkumuloituva eliöille haitallinen metalli, jota käytetään teollisuuden raaka-aineena ympäri maailmaa. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin nikkelin kertymistä täplärapuun (Pacifastacus leniusculus) laboratorio-olosuhteissa kahdella 14 vrk:n altistuskokeella eri nikkelialtistuspitoisuuksilla kahdessa eri lämpötilassa (7 ja 17 °C). Eri testilämpötiloilla pyrittiin selvittämään, onko nikkelin kertyminen riippuvaista vaihtolämpöisen täpläravun aineenvaihduntatasosta. Kokeiden kontrollihavainnoista poikkeavia nikkelipitoisuuksia täpläravuista otetuissa näytteissä havaittiin jo 0,01 ja 0,09 mg Ni l-1 altistuspitoisuuksissa. Altistustasolla 7,7 mg Ni l-1 nikkelin kertyminen täplärapuun oli huomattavaa, ja suurimmat nikkelipitoisuudet mitattiin täplärapujen kiduksista. Lämpötilalla ei ollut tilastollisesti merkitsevää vaikutusta täpläravun kidusten, maksahaiman, pyrstölihaksen, sukupuolirauhasen ja ruoansulatuskanavan nikkelikertymiin. Lämpötilan vaikutuksen havaitsemista häiritsi suuri rapuyksilöiden välinen vaihtelu nikkelin kertymisessä. Ravuille on myös ominaista suuri yksilöiden välinen aineenvaihduntatason vaihtelu. Kokeiden perusteella nikkeli kertyy nopeasti täplärapuun ja voi näin bioakkumuloitua ravintoketjuissa trofiatasolta toiselle varsinkin tilanteissa, joissa nikkelin ympäristöpitoisuus on kohonnut luonnontilaiseen ympäristöpitoisuuteen nähden moninkertaiseksi. In these emissions metals are often in the form of sulfide or chloride which are readily bioavailable to biota. Nickel (Ni) is a hazardous metal for biota and it is used as a raw material in metal industry world-wide. In this thesis Ni accumulation in signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) was studied with two 14-d experiments in different Ni exposure concentrations and at two different water temperatures (7 ja 17 °C). The aim was to compare Ni accumulation at two different water temperatures in order to examine if the accumulation is dependent on the metabolic rate of an ectothermic invertebrate. Measured Ni concentrations of signal crayfish differed from control treatment already at the exposure concentrations 0.01 and 0.09 mg Ni l-1. At 7.7 mg Ni l-1 concentration nickel accumulation in signal crayfish was high, and the highest concentrations were measured from the gill samples. Ni concentrations of gills, hepatopancreas, digestive tract, tail muscle or gonad did not differ statistically significantly between two temperatures. It is characteristic for crayfish to have great variance in metabolic rate between individuals. Thus, the high variance in Ni accumulation between the exposed crayfish individuals prevented the observation of the temperature effect. Based on this study Ni accumulates rapidly in signal crayfish and therefore can bioaccumulate from trophic level to another especially in situations where nickel concentration greatly exceeds its typical background levels.
