Department of Education.\r\n\r\nVocational education provides students practical skills which will be beneficial\r\nfor their future career. Project-based learning (PBL), as an instructional approach,was introduced into China\u2019s vocational education in 2000. Seven core\r\ncompetencies were defined in Competency Inventory for Registered Nurse\r\n(CIRN) and are applied to monitor the standard of nurses. This study aims to\r\nreveal how PBL influences nursing students\u2019 core competencies and to discuss\r\nthe implementation and future improvement of it.\r\n In order to answer these research questions, this case study was conducted\r\nin one vocational college in China. Qualitative method was employed and the\r\ndata was collected from six participants in this college by interviewing them.\r\nThe data were both inductively and deductively analyzed.\r\n The findings show that nursing students have positive and negative impression of the implementation of PBL. The direction of how to improve PBL\r\nwas categorized into two parts: teachers\u2019 role and teaching environment. Five\r\ncomponents from CIRN were found to be enhanced through PBL: critical thinking,\r\nclinical care, leadership, interpersonal relationship and ethical practice.\r\n This study provides a deeper understanding of PBL\u2019s implementation\r\nfrom students\u2019 voice and their views towards the influence of PBL on core competencies. Moreover, this study can contribute to better improve PBL in vocational education.
