Lahopuu on monimuotoinen kasvualusta ja tärkeä elinympäristö monille lajeille boreaalisissa metsissä. Lahopuun ominaisuudet eroavat puulajien välillä ja muuttuvat lahoamisprosessin myötä. Lahopuulla elävien lajien määrä voi vaihdella lahopuun ominaisuuksien mukaisesti. Aitolimasienet (Myxogastria) ovat huonosti tunnettuja lajeja, joita esiintyy monenlaisilla kasvualustoilla, mutta jotka tuntuvat erityisesti suosivan lahoavaa puuainesta. Tässä tutkielmassa tutkin kausittaista vaihtelua aitolimasienten lajirunsaudessa, sekä vertailin lajirunsautta metsänpohjan ja lahopuun välillä. Vertailin myös lajirunsautta ja yhteisökoostumusta eri puulajeilla ja lahoasteilla. Tutkimus toteutettiin lähes luonnontilaisessa boreaalisessa metsässä, Keski-Suomessa. Tutkimus koostui 36 maalahopuusta ja 36 metsänpohjan koealasta. Maalahopuut edustivat 4 puulajia ja 3 lahoastetta. Aitolimasienet kartoitettiin 3 kertaa vuonna 2015: keväällä, kesällä ja syksyllä. Havaintoja kertyi yhteensä 80 lajista, joista 3 oli Suomelle uusia. Lajirunsaus erosi tutkittujen vuodenaikojen välillä ja oli kaikista suurin syksyllä. Lahopuun lajimäärä oli merkitsevästi suurempi kuin metsänpohjan. Lahoasteiden välillä ei ollut merkitsevää eroa, mutta myöhemmät lahoasteet vaikuttaisivat lajirunsaammilta. Merkitsevää eroa lajirunsaudessa ei ollut myöskään puulajien välillä. Yhteisökoostumus näyttäisi olevan erilainen eri puulajeilla, mutta eroja ei pystytty todentamaan tässä tutkimuksessa. Koska aitolimasienten lajirunsaus oli suurempaa lahopuulla kuin metsäpohjalla, luonnontilaiset metsät saattavat olla tärkeitä elinympäristöjä aitolimasienille, sillä niissä lahopuun määrä on suurempi kuin talousmetsissä. Species richness varies both in space and in time. Spatial changes in species richness can be caused by differences in habitat heterogeneity, the amount of available energy and the size of an area observed. In ecological time scale, species richness can change with seasons and ecological succession. These phenomena could also explain changes in the number of species inhabiting dead wood. Decaying wood is a heterogeneous substrate and an important habitat for many species in boreal forests. Properties of decaying wood are different among tree species and are changing in the decaying process. The number of species inhabiting decaying wood can vary accordingly. Plasmodial slime moulds (Myxogastria), also called as myxomycetes, are poorly known species that can occur on many different substrates but seem to prefer decaying woody matter. In this thesis, I studied the seasonality of myxomycete richness and compared myxomycete species richness between forest floor and decaying wood. I also compared species richness and community composition among different host tree species and decay stages. The study was conducted in a near-natural boreal forest, in Central Finland. It comprised of 36 decaying logs and 36 forest floor plots. Logs represented 4 different tree species from 3 decay stages. Myxomycetes were surveyed 3 times during the year 2015: in spring, summer, and autumn. Altogether 80 species were observed, 3 of them being new species for Finland. Species richness varied seasonally and was highest in the autumn. The number of species was also higher on decaying wood than on the forest floor. There was no significant difference in the species numbers between decay stages, but later decay stages had a tendency to support more species. Neither was there a significant difference in species richness between tree species. Community composition differed among tree species, but the result could not be verified in this study. More species inhabited decaying wood than forest floor, which suggests that natural forests, having a higher amount of decaying wood compared to managed ones, could be essential habitats for myxomycetes.
