Niukkaliukoisten, pääasiassa epäorgaanisten kalsiumsuolojen muodostamien saostumien pesun vuoksi haihduttamo joudutaan seisauttamaan usein, mikä rajoittaa koko tehtaan tuotantoa. Kartonkikoneen märkäpäässä saostumat ovat sen sijaan orgaanisia, pääasiassa puun pihkasta johtuvia, yhdisteitä. Kartonkikoneella saostumista seuraa likakatkoja ja hukkaaikaa. Kirjallisuuden ja aiempien tutkimusten perusteella haihduttamon saostumien syyksi selvisi puusta haihdutettavaan laihalipeään liukeneva suuri kalsiumin määrä sekä saostuman muodostumiselle jatkuvasti otolliset olosuhteet haihduttimissa. Koska kalsium on yhteinen tekijä kaikkien haihduttimien saostumissa, tehokkain keino saostumien syntymisen välttämiseksi olisi poistaa laihalipeästä kalsium ennen haihdutusta. Kalsiumkarbonaatin saostumista keittoliuoksesta laboratoriossa tutkimalla saatiin selville, että saostuminen voitaisiin estää madaltamalla keittoliuoksen pH:ta tai lämpötilaa. Lisäksi työssä selvitettiin monielektrodisesti hapetus-pelkistyspotentiaalia mittaavan anturin soveltuvuutta saostumien hallintaan. Signaalien vaihteluiden syy-seuraussuhteiden selvityksellä oli tarkoitus löytää vaihteluita ja saostumia aiheuttavat tekijät. Laihalipeälinjassa anturista ei kuitenkaan ollut merkittävää hyötyä, sillä saostuminen haihduttamolla on jatkuvaa, eikä aiheudu liuoksen kemiallisen tilan vaihteluista. Kartonkikoneen märkäpäässä sen sijaan saatiin selville joitakin mahdollisesti saostumia aiheuttavia mekanismeja. Deposit and scaling problems at Heinola Fluting Mill were examined. Reasons and prevention methods for deposit formation and scaling were evaluated in light of literature and previous studies. In the evaporator plant, scaling blocks the tube heat exchangers which restricts evaporation. Because of the washing of the sparingly-soluble inorganic calcium salt scaling, the evaporator plant needs to be stopped frequently, which restricts production of the whole mill. In the wet end of the board machine deposits are organic instead and originate mainly from wood extractives. Deposits in the wet end cause web breaks and down time. From literature and previous studies it was concluded that the evaporator scaling is largely caused by the large amount of calcium dissolving from wood to spent liquor, which is fed into the evaporator plant. Moreover, the conditions in the evaporator plant are favourable for scale formation. Since calcium is the common factor in the scale of every evaporator unit, the most efficient scale prevention method would be removal of calcium from spent liquor prior to evaporation. By studying calcium carbonate deposition from cooking liquor in laboratory, it was found out that deposition could be prevented by lowering the pH or temperature of the cooking liquor. In addition, a multi-electrode oxidation-reduction potential measuring probe was studied for the use of deposit control. Fluctuations in the two probes’ signals were studied in order to find the causes for deposit formation. In the case of spent liquor, however, the probe was found unnecessary, because scaling in the evaporation plant is continuous and not inflicted by fluctuations in the spent liquor chemistry. In the board machine wet end instead, some possible deposit formation mechanisms were found out using the probe.
