Suomessa tukinuittoon perattuja uomia on pyritty kalataloudellisesti tarkasteltuna kunnostamaan virtakutuisten lohikalojen poikas- ja lisääntymisalueiden parantamisella. Toimenpiteillä ei useinkaan ole saatu merkittävästi nostettua lohikalojen yksilötiheyksiä, ja etenkin pienpoikasalueet ja kutusoraikot ovat usein jääneet heikkolaatuisiksi. Tämä tutkimus tarkasteli taimenen kutusoraikkoja Keski-Suomen kunnostetuissa koskissa, vertaillen eri ympäristömuuttujia luonnon- ja kunnostussoraikkojen, ja kutuun käytettyjen ja käyttämättömien soraikoiden välillä. Neljältä pienehköltä metsäjoelta mitattiin soraikoiden virranopeuksia, tarkasteltiin niiden soran raekokoja ja kiviaineksen rakennetta. Tulosten perusteella kunnostussoraikot sijaitsevat pääosin liian hitaassa virrassa ja niiden soran raekoko on liian tasakokoista. Monipuolinen pohja-aineksen kokojakauma, kohtuullinen virrannopeus ja ison kiven sijainti lähettyvillä lisää soraikon käytön todennäköisyyttä kudussa. Kunnostussoraikkoja on saattanut sijaita aiemmin myös nopean virran alueilla, mutta niiden herkän liikkuvuuden vuoksi, johtuen mm. tasakokoisesta raekoosta, ovat ne saattaneet huuhtoutua vuosien myötä pois kutuun sopivilta alueilta. Pienilläkin korjaus- ja investointitoimilla olisi mahdollista parantaa olemassa olevia kunnostussoraikkoja tuottavammiksi. Lotic waters are diverse habitats which have a wide variety of species adapted into. Today almost all of the lotic water types are affected by different anthropogenic influences, and they are among the most degraded water systems throughout the world. In Finland many of the smallest rivers and creeks have been modified during the 19th and 20th century to be suitable for log floating. At that time river channels were straightened, larger rocks blasted and smallest islands removed to ease the log flow. Modifications increased the water velocity and decreased particle retention capacity. Spawning gravels of salmonids ware flushed gravels to unsuitable conditions for their egg development. Today most of the rivers have been restored. From fisheries perspective the main concept has been increasing the suitable habitat for offspring of salmonids. Creating gravel beds in riffle section as artificial spawning grounds has also been one of the most important actions for the restorations. Results have been more or less erratic. In general, the restorations have not been able to raise salmonid densities. This research concentrates to comparing the different microhabitat factors between the man-made and natural gravel beds and also comparing them by the level of use in spawning. Results show that most man-made gravel beds are located in slower water current compared to the natural gravel areas. The heterogenic composition of different particle sizes, moderate water velocity and large rock positioning nearby increases the probability of usage of the particular gravel bed for spawning. Manmade restoration gravels might have been located in faster flow earlier, but by now they have been flushed to unsuitable habitats, partly because of their solid, unilateral size, which makes them unstable. With rather minor reconstruction of the current gravel beds, it could be possible to make them much more reproductive than they are now.
