description Ikääntyminen on yhteydessä kognitiiviseen heikkenemiseen, varsinkin hidastuneeseen prosessointinopeuteen. Aging is associated with cognitive decline, especially slowing of processing speed. On the other hand, physical activity may diminish aging-related cognitive decline. In order to study cognitive functions in elderly and its possible relationship to physical fitness, we recorded pre-attentive event-related potentials (ERP) in both auditory and somatosensory modality in young (n=41, 20–30 years old) and elderly adults (n=90, 63–81 years old). In addition, ERP amplitudes and their relation to cognition (measured with a variety of neuropsychological tests) and physical fitness were investigated in elderly. As expected, we found both auditory (aMMR) and somatosensory mismatch response (sMMR) to be attenuated in aged compared to young adults. This ERP component indicates automatic change detection ability. In aged, neuropsychological tests measuring processing speed correlated with sMMR, but not with aMMR. The better the processing speed, the less attenuated the sMMR was. Better processing speed was also associated with better physical fitness in the aged participants. The results indicate that both aMMR and sMMR are sensitive measures of aging-related attenuation in automatic change detection ability. sMMR may also be a potential biomarker for the early detection of cognitive decline.
