Tutkimus toteutettiin kahdeksan vapaaehtoisen kunnan alueella. Ohjaajat olivat p\u00e4\u00e4osin terveyden-, sairaanhoitajia tai fysioterapeutteja, ja he ohjasivat ryhmi\u00e4 osana omaa perusty\u00f6t\u00e4\u00e4n.\n\nAineisto ker\u00e4ttiin t\u00e4t\u00e4 tutkimusta varten laaditulla strukturoidulla kyselylomakkeella. Ohjaajat t\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t kyselylomakkeen vierivalmennuksen alussa ja sen p\u00e4\u00e4tytty\u00e4. Tutkimuksen aineistoa kuvailevat tulokset saatiin ristiintaulukoinnilla, muodostamalla summamuuttujia ja aineistoa tarkasteltiin Mann Whitneyn U-testill\u00e4.\n \nL\u00e4hes kaikki ohjaajat olivat saaneet ryhm\u00e4ohjauskoulutusta ja ohjanneet ryhmi\u00e4 ennen vierivalmennusta. Hankitusta koulutuksesta ja kokemuksesta huolimatta yli 80 prosentilla ohjaajista oli vain jonkin verran tietoa useasta ryhm\u00e4ohjauksen tietopohjaan sis\u00e4ltyv\u00e4st\u00e4 tietoalueesta. Vierivalmennuksen aikana tietom\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4ntyi ryhm\u00e4ohjaajana toimimisesta (p=.001), ryhm\u00e4n toimintaan vaikuttavista asioista (p=.006), tiedossa erilaisista ryhmist\u00e4 (p=.028) ja ryhm\u00e4prosessien vaiheista (p=.046). Ryhm\u00e4ohjaajat huomioivat hyvin ryhm\u00e4n tunneilmaston. Vierivalmennuksen j\u00e4lkeen ohjaajat arvioivat useammin sopivansa ryhm\u00e4l\u00e4isten kanssa yhteiset s\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6t tulevalle ryhm\u00e4ty\u00f6skentelylle (p=.044). Ohjaajat huomioivat hyvin ryhm\u00e4l\u00e4isten odotuksia ryhm\u00e4ohjaukselta ja huolehtivat jokaisen ryhm\u00e4l\u00e4isen osallistumismahdollisuudesta. Vaikeiden \u2013 ja tunneasioiden k\u00e4sittely koettiin haasteelliseksi. The study was carried out across eight volunteer municipalities. The counsellors were primarily nurses, public health nurses or physiotherapists, and they served as group counsellors as part of their own basic work.\n\nThe research material was collected using a structured survey form drawn up for this study. The counsellors filled out the survey form before and after side-by-side coaching. The descriptive results of the study were derived using cross tabulation, forming the sums of the variables and the materials were examined using the Mann\u2013Whitney U test. \n\nAlmost all of the counsellors had undergone group counsellor training and counselled groups before the side-by-side coaching. Despite their training and experience, over 80% of the counsellors had little knowledge of some of the central theories that form the knowledge base for group counselling. During the side by side training, the counsellors\u2019 knowledge increased regarding working as a group counsellor (p=.001), issues that affect the functioning of the group (p=.006), information about different groups (p=.028) and the different stages of group processes (p=.046). The group counsellors were good at considering the emotional atmosphere of the group. After the side by side coaching, the counsellors estimated that they would agree upon common rules for upcoming group work together with the group members more often (p=.044). The counsellors considered the expectations of the group members regarding group work well, and made sure that each group member had opportunities to participate. The handling of difficult and emotional issues was deemed challenging. The counsellors\u2019 skills in directing discussion regarding failures in lifestyle changes developed during the side by side coaching (p=.031). The group counsellors received a good amount of feedback from the group members and also provided group members with a good amount of feedback. Counselling an activity-based lifestyle group was seen as a pleasant and empowering experience, but on the other hand as a laborious and challenging working method.\n\nIn conclusion, we can state that side-by-side coaching mainly increased the group counsellors\u2019 knowledge base regarding the instruction of an activity-based lifestyle group. Small changes in the counsellors\u2019 skills were observed and the group counsellors had a positive attitude towards group instruction as a working method.
