Oppijoiden kokemuksia tarkasteltiin kielenopiskelun affektiivisten tekij\u00f6iden eli motivaation, asenteiden, kielimin\u00e4n ja kielij\u00e4nnityksen osalta sek\u00e4 siten, kuinka monikielisyys on l\u00e4sn\u00e4 englannin opiskelussa. Oppijoiden kokemuksia taustoitettiin opettajien n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmalla monikielisten oppijoiden englannin opetukseen. Tutkimuksella tavoiteltiin ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 monikielisten maahanmuuttajataustaisten oppijoiden englannin opiskelusta, jotta vieraan kielen opetusta voitaisiin kehitt\u00e4\u00e4 kasvavalle maahanmuuttajatataustaisten oppijoiden joukolle. Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena tapaustutkimuksena ja aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin teemahaastatteluilla. Aineisto koostui seitsem\u00e4n oppijan ja kolmen englannin opettajan haastatteluista. Haastatellut oppijat olivat 5- ja 6-luokkalaisia, joko ensimm\u00e4isen tai toisen polven maahanmuuttajia, joiden \u00e4idinkieli ja kotikieli oli suomen sijaan tai sen ohella jokin muu kieli. Lis\u00e4ksi aineistoon kuuluivat taustatietolomakkeet oppijoiden kielitaidosta ja maahanmuuttotaustasta ja suomi toisena kielen\u00e4 -opettajan arviot oppijoiden suomen kielen tasosta. Aineisto analysoitiin sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin keinoin. Tutkimustulokset osoittivat oppijoiden olevan motivoituneita ja positiivisesti asennoituneita englannin opiskeluun. He k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t englannin opiskelussa my\u00f6s strategioita, joista luottamus kielenoppimiseen n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyi merkitt\u00e4vimp\u00e4n\u00e4. Oppijat, joille suomen kieli aiheutti j\u00e4nnityst\u00e4 ja ymm\u00e4rrysvaikeuksia halusivat eniten k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 \u00e4idinkielt\u00e4\u00e4n englannin opiskelussa, koska heille \u00e4idinkieli toimi ymm\u00e4rryksen kielen\u00e4. Kaikki oppijat kokivat monikielisyyden hy\u00f6dyksi englannin opiskelussa, mutta mainitsivat k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6n hy\u00f6tyin\u00e4 l\u00e4hinn\u00e4 sanojen samanlaisuuden osaamissaan kieliss\u00e4 tai samojen sanojen tai sanaluokkien opiskelun eri kielten tunneilla. Muutoin oppijat kokivat eri kielten opiskelun toisistaan erillisin\u00e4. Opettajat suhtautuivat my\u00f6nteisesti oppijoiden monikielisyyteen, mutta eiv\u00e4t maininneet oppijoiden tukemisesta monikielisyyden hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4misess\u00e4. Tulosten pohjalta havaitaan, ett\u00e4 monikielisyyden ja kielenoppimiskokemuksen laajempi hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4minen englannin opiskelussa vaatii ohjausta. The study mainly examined affective factors such as motivation, attitudes, second language self and language anxiety as well as the realization of multilingualism in the learners\u2019 experiences. Teaching English to multilingual learners was also viewed from teachers\u2019 perspective. The study was motivated by the challenge posed to foreign language teaching by the constantly increasing number of multilingual learners in Finnish basic education and the need to apply foreign language education to meet these students\u2019 needs. The present study was conducted as a qualitative case study by using semi-structured interviews. The data consisted of seven learners\u2019 and three English teachers\u2019 interviews. The learners were 5th and 6th graders with an immigrant background, whose mother tongue was other than Finnish. In addition to the interviews, the data included background information forms about the learners\u2019 immigration and language learning history and Finnish as a second language teachers\u2019 evaluations of the learners\u2019 language skills in Finnish. The data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the learners were motivated to learn English and had positive attitudes to learning the language. They used various learning strategies of which confidence in their language learning abilities stood out as the most significant. Learners who experienced anxiety and difficulties in understanding Finnish were the most keen to use their mother tongue when learning English, because they needed it for translation. All learners felt that multilingualism was beneficial to learning English. However, the only concrete advantages they mentioned were similar words in the languages they knew and same words or word classes learned in different language lessons. They saw no other links between their language studies. Teachers viewed learners\u2019 multilingualism positively, but did not mention the need to support them in relying on their multilingual language skills and experience. The results suggest that learners need guidance and support to exploit the potential resources of their multilingualism.
