Vanhempien sosioekonomisella asemalla on nykyisess\u00e4 kilpailuyhteiskunnassamme yh\u00e4 suurempi merkitys lapsen tulevaisuudelle. T\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus k\u00e4sittelee perhetaustan ja yhteiskunnan yhteytt\u00e4 nuorten kykyjen kehittymiseen, koulumenestykseen ja koulutusmahdollisuuksiin Saksan Baijerissa ja Suomen ruotsinkielisill\u00e4 alueilla. Tutkimuksen l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohtana ovat vuoden 2003 Pisa-tulokset. Sin\u00e4 vuonna ruotsinkielisten osuus Suomessa testatuista 15-vuotiaista oli muita vuosia korkeampi, joten tuloksista voi tehd\u00e4 luotettavampia p\u00e4\u00e4telmi\u00e4 ruotsinkielisten oppimistuloksista ja niihin vaikuttavista tekij\u00f6ist\u00e4.\n\nBaijerilaiset nuoret ovat menestyneet t\u00e4h\u00e4nastisissa PISA- ja muissa koulumenestyst\u00e4 mittaavissa tutkimuksissa muita Saksan osavaltioita paremmin, kun taas Suomessa ruotsinkieliset koululaiset ovat osoittautuneet suomenkielisi\u00e4 heikommiksi. Koska baijerilaisessa ja suomenruotsalaisessa yhteiskunnassa ja perhekulttuurissa on havaittavissa yht\u00e4l\u00e4isyyksi\u00e4 (mm. molemmat yhteiskunnat ovat hyvinvoivia, perhe-el\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4 arvostetaan, avioerot ovat harvinaisia, v\u00e4est\u00f6 on hyvin koulutettua ja ty\u00f6tt\u00f6myys v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4), kiinnostuin siit\u00e4, miksi n\u00e4iden kahden alueen koululaisten Pisa-tulokset eiv\u00e4t suhteessa kunkin maan kaikkien 15-vuotiaiden tuloksiin vastaa toisiaan. \n\nT\u00e4m\u00e4 tutkimus osoittaa, ett\u00e4 hyvin merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 tekij\u00e4 lapsen taitojen kehittymisess\u00e4 ja koulumenestyksess\u00e4 on vanhempien koulutus. Yhteist\u00e4 tutkituille alueille on, ett\u00e4 koulutus n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 ns. periytyv\u00e4n, mutta v\u00e4est\u00f6n koulutus vastaa yhteiskunnan tarpeita, koska ty\u00f6tt\u00f6myys on v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4. Verrattuna muihin Saksan l\u00e4ntisiin osavaltioihin Baijerissa vain pienell\u00e4 osalla sek\u00e4 iseist\u00e4 ett\u00e4 \u00e4ideist\u00e4 on v\u00e4h\u00e4inen koulutus, ja Suomen ruotsinkieliset ovat keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin korkeammin koulutettuja kuin suomenkieliset. Vaikka Baijerissa eriytyminen eri koulutuspoluille tapahtuu jo lasten ollessa 10-vuotiaita ja syntyper\u00e4ll\u00e4 n\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 olevan suuri vaikutus kouluvalintaan, baijerilaisten koululaisten osaaminen on siit\u00e4 huolimatta tasaista. Selityksen\u00e4 t\u00e4h\u00e4n voi olla vahva kodin tuki ja oppimista tukeva ilmapiiri sek\u00e4 my\u00f6s pohjimmiltaan hyvin toimiva, kolmeen - nelj\u00e4\u00e4n koulutuspolkuun jaettu alemman toisen asteen koulutus (Sekundarstufe I). Suomen ruotsinkieliset kodit sek\u00e4 koulut puolestaan n\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t jakautuvan kahtia niin, ett\u00e4 koulutetut vanhemmat tarjoavat lapsilleen jopa suomenkielisi\u00e4 koteja paremmat kulttuuriset, oppimista tukevat resurssit, ja parhaat ruotsinkieliset koulut lukeutuvat Suomen parhaimmistoon, kun taas osassa kodeista oppimisen tuki on suhteellisen v\u00e4h\u00e4ist\u00e4 ja joissakin kouluissa (etenkin L\u00e4nsi-Suomen ruotsinkielisell\u00e4 maaseudulla) osaaminen on heikkoa.
