T\u00e4m\u00e4n proseminaaritutkimuksen\r\ntarkoituksena oli selvitt\u00e4\u00e4, mink\u00e4 verran englannin opettajat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4v\u00e4t tunneillaan\r\nenglantia ja suomea ja miten he perustelevat kielivalintojaan. Taustana k\u00e4ytettiin\r\nteoreettista keskustelua kohdekielen ja \u00e4idinkielen hy\u00f6dyist\u00e4 kohdekielen oppimisen\r\nkannalta sek\u00e4 aiempia tutkimustuloksia opettajien kielenk\u00e4yt\u00f6st\u00e4.\r\nTutkimuksen aineisto koostui kahdesta videokuvatusta kahdeksannen luokan\r\nenglannin tunnista ja tunnit pit\u00e4neiden opettajien haastatteluista. Toisella opettajalla\r\n(A) oli 25 vuoden ty\u00f6kokemus, kun taas toinen opettaja (B) oli noin kaksi vuotta\r\naiemmin valmistunut sijainen. Analyysin p\u00e4\u00e4paino oli haastatteluvastausten\r\nlaadullisessa analysoinnissa videoitujen tuntien ja aiempien tutkimustulosten\r\nvalossa. Tutkimukseen sis\u00e4ltyi my\u00f6s m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4llinen osa, jossa arvioitiin, kuinka paljon\r\nopettajat k\u00e4yttiv\u00e4t kohdekielt\u00e4 ja \u00e4idinkielt\u00e4.\r\nTutkimukseen osallistuneet opettajat halusivat k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 mahdollisimman paljon\r\nenglantia, sill\u00e4 he kokivat oppilaiden altistamisen sille hy\u00f6dylliseksi ja t\u00e4rke\u00e4ksi.\r\nKuvattujen tuntien perusteella heid\u00e4n kielenk\u00e4yt\u00f6ss\u00e4\u00e4n oli kuitenkin eroja. Opettaja\r\nA k\u00e4ytti kohdekielt\u00e4 k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6ss\u00e4 koko ajan eli 100 %. Opettaja B puhui englantia\r\n47 % ajasta, mutta h\u00e4nen kielivalintansa jakautuivat kahteen osaan. Alkutunnista h\u00e4n\r\nk\u00e4ytti 99 % englantia mutta lopputunnista vain 5 %, ilman ett\u00e4 t\u00e4lle l\u00f6ytyi kattavaa\r\nselityst\u00e4. T\u00e4rkeimm\u00e4t syyt k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 \u00e4idinkielt\u00e4 olivat kieliopin opettaminen, kurinpito\r\nja selitykset ja k\u00e4\u00e4nn\u00f6kset suomeksi ellei oppilas ymm\u00e4rr\u00e4 jotakin. Tulosten\r\nperusteella vaikuttaa silt\u00e4, ett\u00e4 opettajan positiivinen k\u00e4sitys omasta suullisesta\r\nkielitaidosta lis\u00e4\u00e4 kohdekielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4.
