Opetusmenetelmänä käytettiin pedagogisen draaman viime aikoina yleistynyttä muotoa, prosessidraamaa, jota pidetään teatteritaiteen yhtenä lajityyppinä. Tämän improvisointiin perustuvan kasvatuksellisen prosessin yhteydessä opitaan käsiteltävän aiheen lisäksi teatteritaiteen perusasioita. Kouluttajana toimi tutkimuksen tekijä. Laakson tutkimuskohteena olivat opiskelijoiden draamakokemukset. Hän etsi vastausta siihen, millaisesta oppimisesta on aiheiden osalta kysymys ja millä muilla alueilla oppimista voidaan katsoa tapahtuneen. Kokemusten vangitsemiseksi opiskelijat kirjoittivat päiväkirjan jokaisen draamajakson lopuksi ja niiden pohjalta suoritettiin oppimiskokemusten analyysi. Kaikki jaksot videoitiin. The aim of the study was to throw light on what student teachers experience during a basic course in educational drama and, on this basis, to arrive at an understanding of the learning potential contained in drama work. Learning potential refers to those learning opportunities that drama work offered. The study focuses on drama teaching which, in addition to seeking a deeper understanding of selected themes, endeavoured to introduce students in a preliminary way to drama work in the Heathcote/Bolton tradition. The researcher worked as the course instructor. The study is a case study where drama experiences are examined using a phenomenological-hermeneutic approach. The collection of data was carried out using data triangulation (video recordings, student diaries, questionnaires, researcher's diary). Process drama proved to be a rich working method offering diverse and very individual experiences. Five areas of significance were formed to include any accumulated learning experiences: the theme dealt with, teacherhood, educational drama, self-reflection and evaluation of various matters that arose. The students' response to the method was unambiguously positive. As far as learning from the themes was concerned, it was revealed that the learning occurring in process drama represents categories that describe broadly-based learning (Eklund-Myrskog 1996): learning as a qualitative change of meaning, learning as a constructive activity aimed at understanding, learning as an interpretative process aiming at a better understanding of reality. It came out that in process drama a person is always working with his/her own personality. The significance of discussions for an in-depth understanding of matters was regarded as important. Drama proved to be suitable for the learning of universals and concepts. The motivation-boosting effect of process drama was also noted. Apart from learning related to the themes, the learningpotential of process drama became apparent in the areas of empathy, selfknowledge, group dynamics and of artistic experiences.
