description Reunamo, E. 2025. Examining the relationships between psychobiosocial states and inflexible responses to self-critical thoughts with self-compassion as the mediating factor. Faculty of Sport and Health Sciences, Psychology of Physical Activity, Health and Wellbeing, Master’s Thesis. 34 pages. Psychological flexibility and inflexibility are creating wide interest in sports as the benefits of psychological flexibility to wellbeing and performance are being discovered. Psychobiosocial states shed light on pre-performance emotional states with great detail, which creates opportunities to investigate different emotional states. Self-compassion is known to support wellbeing, and it is linked with psychological flexibility. So far, self-compassion, or lack of it, is known to be linked with certain moods or conditions, but their connection to psychobiosocial states is unknown. This study aims to discover the connection different psychobiosocial states have to inflexible responses to self-critical thoughts and whether self-compassion mediates these relationships. This study involved 181 Finnish competitive footballers who answered questionnaires about psychobiosocial states (PBS-S), inflexible responses (FoReST) and self-compassion (SCS-SF). Mediation analysis between the variables was run for the psychobiosocial states that had a significant correlation with inflexible responses. Results show that nine out of the 10 dysfunctional psychobiosocial states had a significant correlation with inflexible responses. The mediation analysis showed that self-compassion negatively mediated all of the relationships. In five categories, the point effect of self-compassion was larger than the value of the relationship between psychobiosocial state and inflexible responses. Overall, these findings showcase new information on the connections between different emotional states and inflexible responses. The study highlight the value of self-compassion for athletes by showing it’s role as mediator between psychobiosocial states and inflexible responses. Keywords: psychobiosocial states, psychological inflexibility, psychological flexibility, self-compassion, emotions Reunamo, E. 2025. Examining the relationships between psychobiosocial states and inflexible responses to self-critical thoughts with self-compassion as the mediating factor. Liikuntatieteellinen tiedekunta, Liikunta- ja urheilupsykologian pro gradu -tutkielma. 34 sivua. Tutkimus toteuttiin 181 vastaajan kyselytutkimuksella, jonka osallistujat olivat suomalaisia kilpailullisia jalkapalloilijoita. Asiasanat: psykologinen joustavuus, psykologinen joustamattomuus, psykobiososialiset tunnetilat, itsemyötätunto, tunteet
