description The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) entered into the corporate vocabulary in the 1950s, but only became a more prominent concept in the 2000s. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has slowly taken its place in mainstream management publications since the 1950s. Nevertheless, the research on motivations behind CSR decisions has been lacking behind, with CSR implementation and effectiveness having a more prominent focus in the academic literature. This thesis aims to understand the motivations, drivers and reasons behind CSR decisions in the European context. This helps the businesses, investors, legislators and other stakeholders to rationale CSR decision-making process, promote ethical corporate behaviour, create institutional and business environments for sustainable business, target green investment opportunities, and help legislate better CSR reporting requirements and minimum standards for non-financial activities. This study was following the systematic literature review method building on an extensive theoretical background and including a sample of 33 academic articles studying the motivation behind CSR decisions in the European context. This study contributes the existing literature by identifying and finding support for three main motivation groups behind CSR decisions, namely institutional, relational and moral motivations. The study found that in most cases, there has been multiple different motivations driving managers for CSR engagement, and that no single motivation group overwhelmingly dominated across the studies included. Yritysvastuun (Corporate Social Responsibility, CSR) käsite tuli osaksi liiketoimintasanastoa 1950-luvulla, mutta nousi merkittävämmäksi käsitteeksi vasta 2000-luvulla. Yritysvastuu on hitaasti vakiinnuttanut paikkansa valtavirtajohtamisen julkaisuissa 1950-luvulta lähtien.
