Tämän kirjallisuuskatsauksen tarkoituksena on selvittää, voiko emergenssiä suunnitella, sekä kartoittaa, mitkä tekijät saavat peleissä aikaan emergenttistä käyttäytymistä. Emergenssiä on haastavaa mutta mahdollista suunnitella, ja tutkimuksen tuloksista voi olla hyötyä etenkin pelinkehittämisestä kiinnostuneille, jotka haluavat perehtyä emergenssiin. Tulokset ovat lupaavia, mutta pelien emergenttisten tekijöiden laajempi yleistäminen vaatii laajempaa tutkimusta. Emergence is a phenomenon where a set of simple rules leads to complex behavior and variation. It gives players more freedom to play in their own way, and also enhances the replayability of the game. The purpose of this literature review is to find out if it is possible to design emergence, as well as define which factors cause emergent behaviour in games. It seems that emergence is difficult but possible to design, and the results of this study can be particularly useful for aspiring game designers who want to familiarize themselves with the concept of emergence in games. The results are promising, but a more extensive study is required to accurately generalize the factors that cause emergence in games.
