Tutkielma tarkastelee, kuinka englannin kielen oppiminen toisena kielenä voi olla hyödyksi suomalaisille autismikirjon häiriöön (ASD) diagnosoiduille lapsille. Aineisto kerättiin kyselylomakkeella, johon saatiin 34 vastausta vanhemmilta. Kyselyssä kartoitettiin muun muassa englannin kielen oppimisen haasteita, hyötyjä ja oppimisprosessin taustatekijöitä. Tulokset analysoitiin määrällisten ja laadullisten menetelmien avulla. Keskeisten tulosten mukaan 70 % vastaajista koki, että heidän lapsensa piti englannin kielestä ja hyötyi sen oppimisesta. Englanti nähtiin hyödyllisenä erityisesti tunteiden ilmaisussa, ikävien asioiden käsittelyssä ja ajatusten jäsentämisessä. Tutkimuksen tulokset viittaavat siihen, että englannin kielen oppiminen voi tarjota autismikirjon lapsille tärkeän välineen kommunikoinnin ja sosiaalisten taitojen kehittämiseen. Tämä korostaa tarvetta yksilöllisesti suunnitelluille kieltenopetusohjelmille, jotka ottavat huomioon autismikirjon lasten erityistarpeet.
