description Tässä opinnäytetyössä tutkittiin aktiivihiilen pintakemiaa. This thesis investigated the surface chemistry of activated carbon. The research was conducted on commission from Neova Oy, with the objective of comparing the activated carbons produced in their research and development laboratory with commercial activated carbons. The investigation also encompassed pore size distribution and surface area, with the objective of determining their influence on the adsorption process. The primary focus of the study was to ascertain the impact of these properties on the process of adsorption. The objective of the literature review was to provide an insight into the surface chemistry of activated carbon, to assess the influence of this chemistry on adsorption processes and to identify the most suitable methodologies for investigating it. Furthermore, a number of techniques for modifying the surface chemistry of activated carbon were investigated. In the experimental part the samples of activated carbon were prepared by the processes of carbonisation and physical activation. The study was conducted to investigate the surface chemistry of activated carbon. This was achieved through the utilisation of Boehm titration, FTIR spectroscopy, XPS spectroscopy and the determination of adsorption isotherms using a BET analyser. Furthermore, an elemental analysis was conducted to provide additional insights into the surface chemistry. The results indicated that a relatively limited number of functional groups containing heteroatoms in relation to carbon were identified. It could be postulated that for these carbons the adsorption process was predominantly physisorption based, with a minimal contribution from chemisorption. It could therefore be concluded that the advanced pore structure and the basic π basal planes are primarily responsible for the adsorption process in this case. In addition to this information, the research offers a foundation for selecting potential avenues for modifying the carbon surface and has identified the optimal methodologies for investigating the carbon surface. In conclusion, the research had provided new insights into the surface chemistry of Neova Carbons activated carbons and its effect on adsorption.
