Uusiutuvien luonnonvarojen, kuten puun, k\u00e4ytt\u00f6\u00e4 tullaan kuitenkin viel\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n Suomessa ja muissa EU-maissa, mik\u00e4 tulee nykyisell\u00e4 metsien suojeluasteella ja k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tavoilla v\u00e4hent\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n mets\u00e4ss\u00e4 el\u00e4vien lajien elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4. N\u00e4iden lajien suojeluun on siis entist\u00e4 suurempi tarve. Suojeluprojektit tarvitsevat toimiakseen tietoa lajeista, jotka ilment\u00e4v\u00e4t korkean monimuotoisuuden kohteita hyvin. Usein sellaisista lajeista ei kuitenkaan l\u00f6ydy tarpeeksi tietoa, mink\u00e4 takia suojelussa saatetaan t\u00e4ydent\u00e4\u00e4 alueellista lajitietoa elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6malleilla. Elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6malleilla voidaan ennustaa lajille soveltuvia elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6j\u00e4 tietyll\u00e4 alueella. Petolintuja, kuten kanahaukkaa (Accipiter gentilis), k\u00e4ytet\u00e4\u00e4n usein mallinnukseen, sill\u00e4 ne ovat hyvi\u00e4 elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6n laadun bioindikaattoreita. Tutkielman tavoitteena oli parantaa elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6mallien tehokkuutta luonnonsuojelussa kehitt\u00e4m\u00e4ll\u00e4 mallinnustapaa, jolla elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6mallinnuksen tarkkuutta voitaisiin parantaa osittain ep\u00e4varmoja aineistoja k\u00e4ytett\u00e4ess\u00e4. Aineistojen ep\u00e4varmuutta v\u00e4hennettiin ydinsilotusmenetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4 ja ty\u00f6 tehtiin maksimientropiamallinnuksella kanahaukan pes\u00e4tietoja k\u00e4ytt\u00e4en. Mallinnuksen tuloksia verrattiin aiemmin k\u00e4ytettyyn aineistojen resoluution karkeistamiseen perustuvaan menetelm\u00e4\u00e4n sek\u00e4 uusimmilla ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6muuttuja-aineistoilla tehtyyn ennusteeseen. Ydinsilotusmenetelm\u00e4\u00e4n perustuvalla mallinnuksella oli mahdollista l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 useampia kanahaukan pesint\u00e4\u00e4n riitt\u00e4v\u00e4n kokoisia hyvi\u00e4 elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6laikkuja kuin vertailukohtana k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4ll\u00e4 menetelm\u00e4ll\u00e4. Kanahaukalle soveltuvien elinymp\u00e4rist\u00f6jen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 oli v\u00e4hentynyt uusimmilla ymp\u00e4rist\u00f6muuttuja-aineistoilla tehdyn ennusteen mukaan. However, the use of renewable resources, such as wood, will be increasing in Finland and in other EU countries, which will lead to, under the current levels of forest protection and management practices, a reduction in habitats available for forests-dwelling species. Only a fraction of Finland\u2019s forests is protected, which is a reason for an even greater need for conservation efforts aimed at species dependent on forest habitats. Conservation projects require data on species that indicate high diversity areas well. Often, however, there is insufficient information on such indicator species, so regional species data can be supplemented with habitat suitability models. Habitat suitability models can be used to predict suitable habitats for species in a specific area. Birds of prey, such as the northern goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), are often used for modeling purposes because they are good bioindicators of habitat quality. Threats to biodiversity and ecosystems are often assessed based on geographic criteria, such as species distribution and prevalence; therefore, good approaches and methods are needed to predict them. The aim of this thesis was to improve the effectiveness of habitat suitability models in conservation by further developing a modeling method that could enhance the accuracy of habitat suitability models when using partially uncertain data. The uncertainty of the data was reduced using the kernel smoothing method, and the modeling was performed using maximum entropy modeling with the goshawks\u2019 nest data. The modeling results were compared to a previously used method based on coarsening the resolution of the data, as well as to a projection made with the latest environmental variable data. The modeling based on the kernel smoothing method was able to identify more good habitat patches of sufficient size for the goshawk than the method used as a comparison and the number of habitats suitable for the goshawk had decreased according to a projection made with the latest environmental variable data.
