Tällöin fluidi käyttäytyy leikkaispaksunevasti, eli siinä tapahtuu dilataatio, joka voi esiintyä jatkuvana tai epäjatkuvana. Dilataatioon vaikuttavat monet fluidin ominaisuudet, kuten hiukkasten tilavuusosuus ja lämpötila. Yhtenäistä teoriaa dilataatiolle ei ole vielä löytynyt, mutta tutkielmassa tutustutaan muutamiin dilataation selittämiseksi käytettyihin malleihin. Dilatantilla fluidilla on sovelluskohteita eritysesti tärinän vaimentimissa sekä puettavissa suojavarusteissa, joissa se tarjoaa erityisen hyvää suojaa erilaisilta iskuilta. Huolimatta lupaavista tutkimustuloksista erityisesti suojavarusteiden kohdalla, liittyy sovelluksiin vielä ratkaisemattomia kysymyksiä esimerkiksi lämpötilan vaikutuksen huomioimisesta. In this thesis a theory and some applications of non-Newtonian dilatant fluid are discussed. Viscosity of non-Newtonian dilatant fluid increases when applied shear rate exceeds the critical value. Dilatancy or shear thickening can be continuous or discontinuous. Many fluid properties, such as particle volume fraction and temperature, influence shear thickening. A unified theory for dilatation has not yet been found, but this thesis explores a few models which are used to explain shear thickening. Dilatant fluid has applications especially in dampers and body armors, where it offers particularly good protection against stabs. Despite promising research results, especially in protective equipment, there are still unresolved issues related to applications, such as considering the effect of temperature.
