103 artikkelia muodosti tutkimuksen aineiston. With their current relevance and visibility in the media, topics related to the environment have divided under a multitude of themes. Increasing concerns about climate change, sustainability and extreme weather conditions have made relevant environment news reporting of the utmost importance. The focus of this master’s thesis was on the Guardian’s environment related reporting in their online news. The study aimed to uncover the scope of environment related themes, identify how the themes are represented, and analyse which linguistic and textual aspects create these representations. 103 articles were selected as the data of this study. These articles, which appeared online under the Guardian’s ‘environment’- topic tag, were first categorized according to their primary country, tone and theme using methods of content analysis. Five main thematic categories were formed based on the primary categorization, and five articles responding to them were selected for further analysis. Here, methods of critical discourse analysis were used to uncover which structures, word choices, voice, tone, and other textual elements created representation of the themes. The theoretical framework for CDA was based on Fairclough (1992, 1997), van Dijk (1988), as well as Pietikäinen and Mäntynen (2009), whereas the content analysis framework followed Stemler (2015), Huckin (2003), as well as Hsieh and Shannon (2005). The most relevant themes in the analysis were identified to be extinction issues, environmental activism and campaigning, the global oil- and energy industry, air pollution, and environmental politics. Further analysis revealed how the representations were created in each article, taking into account the perspective of reporting and the linguistic choices that were the primary tool for creating representations. Elements of representation were identified across the analysis, especially when it came to the word choices, structures, voice, and tone.
