Pro gradu -tutkielmamme tarkoituksena oli tutkia varhaisia matemaattisia taitoja tarkastelemalla vastasyntyneiden aivojen kyky\u00e4 havaita eroja pieniss\u00e4 lukum\u00e4\u00e4riss\u00e4 auditorisessa \u00e4\u00e4nisarjoja sis\u00e4lt\u00e4v\u00e4ss\u00e4 koeasetelmassa. Lis\u00e4ksi tutkimme, ovatko vanhempien matemaattiset taidot yhteydess\u00e4 vastasyntyneiden aivovasteisiin. Tutkimus on osa EarlyMath-tutkimushanketta, jonka tarkoituksena on selvitt\u00e4\u00e4 varhaisten matemaattisten taitojen, tunteiden sek\u00e4 motivaation kehityst\u00e4. Otos koostui 41 vastasyntynyt-vanhempi-parista (16 \u00e4iti\u00e4, 25 is\u00e4\u00e4) ja tutkimusaineisto ker\u00e4ttiin vuosien 2022\u20132024 aikana. Aineisto koostui vastasyntyneiden EEG-aineistosta, joka oli ker\u00e4tty auditorisen pienten lukum\u00e4\u00e4rien koeasetelman aikana vastasyntyneiden nukkuessa, sek\u00e4 vanhempien matemaattisia taitoja arvioivasta testist\u00f6st\u00e4. Vanhempien symbolisia matemaattisia taitoja mitattiin yhteen-, v\u00e4hennys-, kertolasku- ja artimetiikkatesteill\u00e4. Vanhempien ei-symbolisia matemaattisia taitoja mitattiin m\u00e4\u00e4rienvertailun testill\u00e4. Tutkimuskysymyksiin vastattiin toistettujen mittausten varianssianalyyseill\u00e4, joissa k\u00e4ytettiin kovariaatteina vanhempien symbolisia ja ei-symbolisia matemaattisia taitoja. Teimme analyysin kullekin EEG-aineiston 100 ms pituiselle analyysiv\u00e4lille 100\u20131000 ms \u00e4rsykkeen alkamisesta. Tulokset osoittivat vastasyntyneiden aivojen havaitsevan selv\u00e4sti eron 2-osaisen ja 1-osaisen sini\u00e4\u00e4nen v\u00e4lill\u00e4 aikav\u00e4lill\u00e4 200\u2013700 ms. 2-osaisen ja 3-osaisen \u00e4\u00e4nen v\u00e4lill\u00e4 tulos ei ollut yht\u00e4 selke\u00e4, vaan se j\u00e4i yksitt\u00e4isen analyysiv\u00e4lin 600\u2013700 ms havainnoksi. Vastasyntyneiden p\u00e4\u00e4lakilohkojen v\u00e4lill\u00e4 ei juuri havaittu eroja pienten lukum\u00e4\u00e4rien havaitsemisessa. Vanhempien matemaattisilla taidoilla oli yhteys vastasyntyneiden kykyyn havaita pieni\u00e4 lukum\u00e4\u00e4ri\u00e4, mutta havaitut yhteydet ilmeniv\u00e4t j\u00e4lleen yksitt\u00e4isill\u00e4 analyysiv\u00e4leill\u00e4, eiv\u00e4tk\u00e4 kovinkaan johdonmukaisesti. Yksitt\u00e4iset tulokset saattavat johtua tilastollisesta sattumasta tai esimerkiksi menetelm\u00e4llisist\u00e4 puutteista. Tutkimuksemme on ensimm\u00e4inen laatuaan ja tukee teoriaa siit\u00e4, ett\u00e4 lukum\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4isyyden taju on varhain ilmenev\u00e4 synnynn\u00e4inen ominaisuus. The aim of our master\u2019s thesis was to shed light on early mathematical \ncapacities by exploring the abilities of the newborn brain to detect changes in small numerosity in \nauditory sound stream. We then further studied whether this ability is connected to the parents\u2019 \nmathematical skills. Our study was a part of the EarlyMath research project which addresses the \nconnection between early mathematical skills, motivation, and feelings.\nThe sample consisted of 41 newborn-parent pairs (16 mothers, 25 fathers) and the data was \ncollected between 2022 and 2024. The data included newborn EEG recordings and mathematical skill \ntests of the parents. Symbolic mathematical skills were assessed with basic addition, subtraction, \nmultiplication and arithmetic tasks. Non-symbolic mathematical skills were assessed by visual \nquantity comparison task. Our research questions were answered using repeated measures ANOVAs \nwhere we used parents\u2019 symbolic skills and parents\u2019 non-symbolic skills as covariates. The newborn \nEEG data was analysed in 100 ms long time intervals in 100-1000 ms timeframe after the onset of \nthe auditory stimulus.\nThe results showed that the newborn brain was able to detect change between 2 and 1 sounds \nbetween 200\u2013700 ms. However, based on our analysis the newborns could detect change between 2 \nand 3 sounds only during 600\u2013700 ms time interval. There was not significant difference between the \nbrain hemispheres. We found a connection between the parents\u2019 mathematical skills and the \nnewborns\u2019 abilities to detect changes in small numerosity during some time intervals, but the \nconnections were inconsistent. The sparse connections may be a result of statistical coincidence or \nthe inapplicability of our analysis intervals.\nOur research is the first of its kind and supports the theory of number sense being an innate \nability. The results also support the theory that mathematical skills are heritable and that the effect of \nheritability can already be seen in newborns. In addition, our research shows that EEG as a method \nis adequate when researching early mathematical abilities.
