Examining the Relationships Between Moods and Sport Burnout Among Finnish Team Sport Athletes

description Urheilu-uupumus on lisääntynyt urheilijoiden keskuudessa viime vuosina. Sport burnout among athletic populations has increased in past years. Athletes, who face high pressure and demanding situations often are more prone to sport burnout. Sport burnout is also closely related to negatively perceived moods of anger, anxiety, tension, fatigue and depression. The objective of this study was to examine what type of relationships these moods have with sport burnout. Second objective of this study was to examine if there are any moods which could buffer the symptoms of sport burnout. A sample of 78 female and male athletes, aged between 15-23 years, practicing different team sports at competitive level took part to this study. The study was a cross-sectional study to assess relationships between anxiety, depression, anger, vigor, fatigue, tension and sport burnout. The first hypothesis of this study was that athletes with levels of anxiety, fatigue, tension, anger and depression are at risk for experiencing sport burnout as these moods have positive relationship with sport burnout. Second hypothesis set for the study was that vigor has negative relationship with sport burnout and for this reason, might moderate the symptoms of sport burnout. Descriptive, correlation and regression analyses were conducted to the data. The study results showed that sport burnout positively correlates with anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue and tension. The results indicated that vigor correlates negatively with sport burnout, but only with small magnitude. Moods predicted the proportion of sport burnout variance with 49%. The results gained from the study were in line with both of the hypotheses set. The findings indicate that athletes with high scores on anxiety, depression, anger, fatigue and tension most likely score high on sport burnout or at least have a risk for developing sport burnout. Based on practical applications it seems that vigor has buffering effect against sport burnout symptoms. For this reason, athletes with high scores on vigor might not develop sport burnout or the athletes have milder experiences of sport burnout. Overall, the findings support the idea that sport burnout is a mental health risk among athletic populations and needs attention from the sport professionals also in the future.
