Biohajoavien muovien on mahdollisesti havaittu aiheuttavan jopa enemmän negatiivisia vaikutuksia ympäristöön verrattuna ei-biohajoavaan muoviin. Tähän vaikuttaa biohajoavien muovien biosaatavuus ja niiden taipumus hajota. Tässä tutkimuksessa tutkimme aiheuttaako biohajoavat muovit toksisuutta vesikirppu Daphnia magnaan, vaikuttavatko biohajoavat muovit D. magnan lisääntymiseen ja tiettyjen geenien ilmentymiseen. Näitä tutkittiin akuutilla- ja kroonisella toksisuuskokeella, joiden konsentraatiot vaihtelivat 3,2–320 mg/l välillä. Tuloksista havaittiin, että biohajoavat muovit aiheuttivat D.magnan kuolleisuutta. Kuolleisuus on voinut aiheutua siitä, että biohajoavat muovit on kehitetty hajoaviksi, jonka myötä ne voivat vapauttaa vaarallisia lisäaineita ympäristöön. Kroonisessa toksisuuskokeessa vesikirput lisääntyivät alhaisemmissa biohajoavien muovien pitoisuuksissa enemmän kuin kontrollipitoisuudessa Mahdollinen selitys lisääntyneelle poikastuotannolle on se, että jotkin bakteereista voivat hyödyntää biohajoavia muoveja hiilenlähteenä. Bakteerit lisääntyvät ja täten vesikirpuilla on enemmän ravintoa ja energiaa voitiin hyödyntää enemmän lisääntymiseen. Kroonisen toksisuuskokeen jälkeen geenivasteissa havaittiin vierasainemetaboliaan liittyvien mox ja gst geenien vaimennussäätelyä. Mahdollisesti näiden geenien vaimennussäätely kompensoi esimerkiksi eloonjäämiseen liittyvien geenien lisääntynyttä ilmentämistä. Tätä geenien vaimennussäätelyä on havaittu D. magnalla ja lisääntymiseen liittyvällä vtg1 geenillä, jolloin energiaa siirtyi lisääntymisestä selviytymiseen. Kaiken kaikkiaan nämä vaihtelevat tulokset biohajoavien muovien vaikutuksista D.magnaan indikoivat, että biohajoavat muovit voivat aiheuttaa toksisia vaikutuksia eliöille niiden ”ympäristöystävällisyys” leimasta huolimatta. Microplastics are known to produce negative effects in the environment. Due to these adverse effects, a replacement for conventional petroleum-based plastics is needed. The newer methods produce biodegradable plastic from natural and conventional resources. However, previous studies have detected that some biodegradable plastics will not degrade as promised in the environment, especially in aquatic environments. Also, they might cause similar or even higher environmental risks than conventional plastics. This is due to biodegradable plastics' bioavailability and tendency to degrade. In this study, we wanted to find out if biodegradable plastics cause toxic effects to Water flea Daphnia magna, and if they affect D. magna reproduction and gene expression in certain genes. These were studied with acute and chronic toxicity tests with a concentration range of 3.2–320 mg/l. The results showed that biodegradable plastic caused mortality in D. magna in the acute toxicity test. This might be caused by the microplastics' tendency to degrade and release toxic additives into the environment. In the chronic toxicity test, the lowest concentration of some of the tested, biodegradable plastics increased the reproduction of D. magna. One possible explanation for this phenomenon is that some bacteria might be able to use biodegradable plastics as a carbon source, leading to an increase in the number of bacteria. D. magna may utilize these bacteria as food and thus have more energy for reproduction. After the chronic experiment a downregulation of gst and mox xenobiotic metabolism-related genes was detected. One possible explanation for this downregulation is that the genes are being downregulated to compensate, for example, for the increased expression of survival-related genes. This is one hypothesis brought up when the downregulation of reproduction-related vtg1 gene was seen in D. magna to allocate more energy for survival. Overall, these mixed results of the biodegradable plastics toxicity on D. magna indicate that biodegradable plastics could cause toxic effects to aquatic organisms despite their "environmentally friendly" label.
