One viral song trend on TikTok can almost overnight catapult an artist into massive commercial and chart success. Not only is the social media platform now a major channel for music discovery as well as a powerful music marketing tool, but the app now affects almost every aspect of the industry from physical sales all the way to how artists and fans interact with each other.\n\nOn TikTok where audio is at the very center of the app design and user experience, songs spread through user-generated content \u2013 users of the app create videos using different audio tracks or \u201cSounds\u201d spreading the audio to their audience and encouraging them to create their own videos using the same track. With this unique app concept, TikTok is changing music marketing from the traditional social media co-creation model to a model with user-generated content at its core. This means, that for anyone interested in music promotion on the platform, knowing one\u2019s audience is key when it comes to successful corporate communication efforts. For this reason, this study aims to shed light on one music community in particular \u2013 the Finnish hip hop community \u2013 on the platform to give one example of a detailed account of a TikTok music community and its culture when it comes to content creation and ways of using music. This study investigates this matter through digital ethnography and qualitative content analysis.
