Biohiili ja hydrohiili ovat hiilipitoisia lannoitteita, joita pystyt\u00e4\u00e4n tuottamaan teollisuuden biomassaj\u00e4\u00e4mist\u00e4 termokemiallisten muunnostekniikoiden avulla. T\u00e4ss\u00e4 tutkimuksessa selvitin, miten koivun kuoresta valmistettu biohiili ja hydrohiili vaikuttavat maaper\u00e4n kasvihuonekaasup\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6ihin, biomassan tuotantoon, sek\u00e4 maaper\u00e4n ominaisuuksiin, kuten pH:seen, mineraalityppeen, mikrobibiomassaan, sek\u00e4 orgaanisen aineksen ja hiilen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4\u00e4n, ja vertasin saatuja tuloksia typpilannoitteen vaikutuksiin. Koe oli kolmen kuukauden pituinen mesokosmikoe kasvihuoneolosuhteissa. Kahteen k\u00e4sittelyyn lis\u00e4ttiin joko pelkk\u00e4\u00e4 biohiilt\u00e4, tai hydrohiilt\u00e4, ja kahteen k\u00e4sittelyyn hiilen lis\u00e4ksi lis\u00e4ttiin typpilannoitetta yleisten maatalousk\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6jen mukainen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4. K\u00e4sittelyj\u00e4 oli yhteens\u00e4 kuusi: C kontrolli, TB biohiili, TH hydrohiili, TN typpilannoite, TNB typpilannoite + biohiili, ja TNH typpilannoite + hydrohiili. Hydrohiilen lis\u00e4ys v\u00e4hensi merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti maaper\u00e4n typpioksidi (N2O) p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6j\u00e4 tutkimusjakson aikana. Hiilen lis\u00e4\u00e4minen ei vaikuttanut merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti maaper\u00e4n hiilidioksidi (CO2) tai metaani (CH4) p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6ihin. K\u00e4sittelyiss\u00e4, joihin typpilannoitetta oli lis\u00e4tty samanaikaisesti hiilen kanssa, havaittiin korkeammat N2O p\u00e4\u00e4st\u00f6t, joita kuitenkin kompensoi korkeampi biomassan tuotanto. Biochar and hydrochar are carbon-rich amendments, which can be produced with thermochemical conversion techniques from industrial biomass residues. In my thesis, I examined the emissions of all three GHGs; CO2, N2O, and CH4 for three months from agricultural soil in a mesocosm experiment after the amendments of birch bark biochar and hydrochar. To better explain the GHG emissions, two plant biomass harvests were conducted, and soil physicochemical properties, such as pH, mineral nitrogen (N), microbial biomass and bulk soil organic matter (SOM) and soil organic carbon (SOC) from soils collected at the beginning and at the end of the experiment were analyzed. Chars were applied alone at two different rates to compare the effects of two different char types, and simultaneously with synthetic N fertilizer totaling in six treatments: C control, TB biochar only, TH hydrochar only, TN fertilizer only, TNB biochar + fertilizer, and TNH hydrochar + fertilizer. Hydrochar application alone reduced the cumulative emissions of N2O significantly over the study period. Emissions of CO2 and CH4 were not impacted by char application. Simultaneous applications of either char and N fertilizer resulted in higher N2O emissions, which was however compensated with higher biomass production. Furthermore, the amount of mineral NO3- and soil organic matter (SOM) content was higher in these treatments. Our results indicate that chars' ability together with N fertilizer can enhance biomass production and improve soil fertility. Our experiment was a short-term mesocosm experiment conducted in a greenhouse without environmental variability and reflects only possible scenarios in the field conditions.
