We examined various coaching methods to support player self-confidence as well as what constitutes player self-confidence among U20 elite junior ice hockey players. In the Finnish context, ice hockey has been relatively under-researched, which is why we chose this topic, as its position as a major sport is significant.\n\nThe theoretical framework of the study is phenomenological-hermeneutic. The study is qualitative, employing a semi-structured thematic interview method. We interviewed a total of 6 players and 3 head coaches from three different U20 elite junior ice hockey teams. All players were of legal age. The interviews lasted on average 29 minutes for players (21\u201339 min) and 52 minutes for coaches (39\u201373 min). The transcribed material amounted to a total of 58 pages in font size 12 and single line spacing 1. The data was analyzed using theory-guided content analysis, drawing from literature on self-confidence and interaction.\n\nPlayer self-confidence was mostly influenced by feelings of success, self-awareness, and achieved status within the team. Naturally, there were clear differences among individuals in what they considered meaningful to themselves. Coaches have several ways to support the development of player self-confidence, with the most important being setting and monitoring clear goals, strengthening player identity, providing feedback, supporting development, and building trust. Interestingly, players and coaches perceived fair treatment slightly differently within team interactions. According to U20 elite junior players, good coach qualities included approachability, player-centeredness, and situational awareness, knowing when to give feedback or instructions.\n\nThe thesis suggests that coaches have several means to support the development of player self-confidence. Each athlete is also an individual, which is why coaches need to know their players well as individuals too. When this coach-player interaction is strong and their relationship is open, it is possible to find the right ways to help players because not everything works the same for everyone. Suomalaisessa kontekstissa j\u00e4\u00e4kiekkoa on tutkittu varsin v\u00e4h\u00e4n, mink\u00e4 vuoksi p\u00e4\u00e4dyimme aiheeseen, koska sen asema suurena lajina on merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4\n\nTutkimuksen tieteenfilosofinen l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohta on fenomenologis-hermeneuttinen. Tutkimus on kvalitatiivinen, jossa tutkimusmenetelm\u00e4n\u00e4 toimi puolistrukturoitu teemahaastattelu. Haastattelimme yhteens\u00e4 6 pelaajaa sek\u00e4 3 p\u00e4\u00e4valmentajaa kolmesta eri U20 SM-sarjatason joukkueesta. Kaikki pelaajat olivat t\u00e4ysi-ik\u00e4isi\u00e4. Haastattelut kestiv\u00e4t pelaajilla keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin 29 minuuttia (21\u201339 min) ja valmentajilla keskim\u00e4\u00e4rin 52 minuuttia (39\u201373 min). Litteroitua aineistoa kertyi yhteens\u00e4 58 sivua fonttikoolla 12 ja riviv\u00e4lill\u00e4 1. Aineisto k\u00e4siteltiin teoriaohjaavan sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin avulla, mink\u00e4 vuoksi analyysi pohjautui kirjallisuuteen itseluottamuksesta sek\u00e4 vuorovaikutuksesta.\n\nPelaajan itseluottamukseen vaikuttivat eniten onnistumisen tunteet, itsetuntemus sek\u00e4 saavutettu asema joukkueessa. Yksil\u00f6iden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 oli eroja siin\u00e4, mit\u00e4 he pit\u00e4v\u00e4t merkityksellisen\u00e4 itselleen. Valmentajalla oli useita tapoja tukea pelaajan itseluottamuksen rakentumista ja t\u00e4rkeimpin\u00e4 niist\u00e4 olivat tarkkojen tavoitteiden asettaminen ja niiden seuranta, pelaajaidentiteetin vahvistaminen, palautteenanto, kehityksen tukeminen sek\u00e4 luottamussuhteen rakentaminen. Ristiriitaisesti pelaajat ja valmentajat kokivat tasapuolisen kohtelun hieman eri tavalla joukkueen sis\u00e4isess\u00e4 vuorovaikutuksessa. Hyv\u00e4n valmentajan ominaisuuksiin U20 SM-sarjan pelaajien mielest\u00e4 kuului helposti l\u00e4hestytt\u00e4vyys, pelaajakeskeisyys sek\u00e4 tilanteen tunnistamisen taidot, eli miss\u00e4 kohtaa antaa palautetta tai ohjeita.\n\nTutkielman avulla voidaan p\u00e4\u00e4tell\u00e4, ett\u00e4 valmentajalla on useita keinoja tukea pelaajan itseluottamuksen rakentumista. Jokainen urheilija on my\u00f6s yksil\u00f6, mink\u00e4 vuoksi valmentajan on tunnettava pelaajansa hyvin my\u00f6s ihmisin\u00e4. Tutkimuksen perusteella voidaan sanoa, ett\u00e4 kun pelaajan ja valmentajan v\u00e4linen vuorovaikutussuhde on toimiva ja avoin, on mahdollista l\u00f6yt\u00e4\u00e4 oikeat keinot auttaa pelaajaa. Vuorovaikutuksellista puolta valmentamisessa ja joukkueurheilussa ei tulisi sivuuttaa.
