Perusopetuksen opetussuunnitelman perusteet nosti kielitietoisuuden keskeiseksi koulun kehitt\u00e4misen suuntaviivaksi. T\u00e4m\u00e4n tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli lis\u00e4t\u00e4 ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 siit\u00e4, millaisena monikielisen koulun kielitietoisuus n\u00e4ytt\u00e4ytyy rehtoreiden n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmasta. Kvalitatiivisen tutkimuksen aineisto koostui kahdeksan rehtorin teemahaastatteluista. Koulut sijaitsivat kuudessa kaupungissa p\u00e4\u00e4kaupunkiseudun ulkopuolella. Koulujen oppilaista merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4 osa oli maahanmuuttotaustaisia. Aineistol\u00e4ht\u00f6isess\u00e4 fenomenografisessa analyysissa syntyneit\u00e4 kuvauskategorioita peilattiin kielellisesti vastuullisen opetuksen viitekehykseen. Tulosten mukaan kollektiivisesti tarkasteltuna rehtorit k\u00e4sittiv\u00e4t kielitietoisuuden laajasti koulun toimintaan, kuten opetukseen, oppilaantuntemukseen ja toiminnan organisointiin, vaikuttavana tarkastelutapana. Kuitenkin rehtoreiden k\u00e4sitykset viittasivat siihen, ett\u00e4 suomen kielen k\u00e4ytt\u00f6 ja oppiminen ja oppilaan ensikieli asettuivat koulun k\u00e4yt\u00e4nn\u00f6iss\u00e4 usein ristiriitaan, jota kielellisesti vastuullisen opetuksen viitekehys ohjaa purkamaan. Oppilaan kielitaustaa pyrittiin arvostamaan, mutta ensikielen tukemista ei aina pidetty osana koulun toimintaa. Tulokset viittaavat siihen, ett\u00e4 kielitietoinen pedagogiikka on jossain m\u00e4\u00e4rin vakiintunut ulottuvuus monikielisten koulujen toimintakulttuureissa. Osa opettajista ja rehtoreista hy\u00f6tyisi t\u00e4ydennyskoulutuksesta.
