Digitalization has become not only a pursuit of competitive advantage but also a necessity for organizations to maintain business. Digital transformation refers to the reinvention of operations and processes using digital solutions. This Master's thesis examines digitalization and digital transformation in the Finnish higher education institutions. The aim was to explore the objectives pursued through digital transformation and how digital transformation is led and implemented in the Finnish higher education sector. Through qualitative methods, a multi-case study was conducted involving three organizations representing different sizes and backgrounds in the higher education sector. Through empirical research, it was observed that while organizations share similar objectives, the stages and methods of digitalization vary significantly between organizations. The objectives of the case organizations include streamlining work processes, competing in a global market, and facilitating remote work and continuous education. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the digitalization of the higher education sector, as teaching, training, research, and administrative work had to be conducted remotely using digital solutions. Key challenges in implementing and managing digitalization and digital transformation include planning challenges, unclear objectives, a large number of systems and their varying usage needs, and the difficulty of completely reinvent processes from a digital perspective. Additionally, the number of parties involved in digitalization planning and their differing perspectives challenge individual higher education organizations, as do the limited resources of the public sector and commitment to change. Laadullisin menetelmin tutkittiin monitapaustutkimuksena kolmea eri kokoista ja taustaista organisaatiota. Empiirisen tutkimuksen toteuttamisen my\u00f6t\u00e4 havaittiin, ett\u00e4 organisaatioiden kesken tavoitteet ovat samankaltaiset, mutta digitalisoitumisen etenemisen vaiheet ja toteutuskeinot eroavat organisaatioiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 merkitt\u00e4v\u00e4sti. Tavoitteena tapausorganisaatioilla on ty\u00f6n sujuvoittaminen, globalisoituvassa kilpailussa p\u00e4rj\u00e4\u00e4minen sek\u00e4 nopeasti yleistyvien et\u00e4opetuksen ja jatkuvan oppimisen mahdollistaminen. Koronapandemia vauhditti korkeakoulusektorin digitalisoitumista, kun opetus, koulutus, tutkimus ja hallinnollinen ty\u00f6 tuli toteuttaa et\u00e4n\u00e4 digitaalisin v\u00e4linein. Keskeisi\u00e4 haasteita digitalisaation ja digitaalisen transformaation toteuttamisessa ja johtamisessa havaittiin olevan suunnittelun haasteet, tavoitteiden ep\u00e4selvyys, suuri m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 j\u00e4rjestelmi\u00e4 ja niiden vaihtelevat k\u00e4ytt\u00f6tarpeet sek\u00e4 vaikeus uudistaa prosesseja digitaalisista l\u00e4ht\u00f6kohdista kokonaan uusiksi. Lis\u00e4ksi digitalisaation suunnittelua toteuttavien tahojen m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4 ja niiden eroavat n\u00e4k\u00f6kulmat haastavat yksitt\u00e4isi\u00e4 korkeakouluja, kuten my\u00f6s julkisen sektorin rajalliset resurssit sek\u00e4 sitoutuminen muutokseen.
