The conception of health influences the nursing care provided by nurses and nursing students and their handling of health issues with patients. Due to different cultural backgrounds, the conceptions of health of foreign-born nursing students may differ from those of the host country's healthcare system. It is important to understand the conceptions of health on which foreign-born nursing students base their actions and upon which they build their understanding of both the healthcare system and nursing. There is little qualitative research on the conceptions of health among nursing students.\n\nThe aim of the study was to explore and describe the qualitatively different conceptions of health among nursing students in the context of nursing work. The purpose was also to enhance and broaden the understanding of the phenomenon by revealing the critical differences between these conceptions.\n\nThe study was conducted as a qualitative interview study using phenomenographic research approach. The data were collected between November 2023 and March 2024 by interviewing eight (n=8) foreign-born nursing students. The participants were second and third-year nursing students from Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America who had lived in Finland for 1-14 years. The interviews were conducted in Finnish or English according to the participants' preferences and transcribed verbatim. The data were analyzed using phenomenographic analysis method.\n\nAccording to phenomenographic analysis, conceptions could be grouped into four hierarchically expanding categories of description. At its narrowest, health was seen as technical nursing actions (category I), and at its broadest, as a general and equal right (category IV). Between these were the categories \"The nurse's own health as an enabler of nursing actions\" (category II) and \"Health as holistic action\" (category III). The hierarchical structure of categories of description emerged as critical differences between recurring themes when moving from one category to another, which included 1) the patient's role, 2) the nurse's role, 3) the role of the work community, and 4) the implementation of nursing care. The results of the study increase understanding of qualitatively different ways of understanding and attributing meaning to health in nursing work as described by foreign-born nursing students. Sairaanhoitaja-opiskelijoiden terveysk\u00e4sityksist\u00e4 ei laadullista tutkimusta juuri ole.\n\nTutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli kartoittaa ja kuvata sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden laadullisesti erilaisia k\u00e4sityksi\u00e4 terveydest\u00e4 sairaanhoitajan ty\u00f6ss\u00e4. Tarkoitus oli my\u00f6s pyrki\u00e4 lis\u00e4\u00e4m\u00e4\u00e4n ja laajentamaan ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 ilmi\u00f6st\u00e4 k\u00e4sitysten v\u00e4lisi\u00e4 kriittisi\u00e4 eroja paljastamalla.\n \nTutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena haastattelututkimuksena fenomenografisella l\u00e4hestymistavalla. Tutkimuksen aineisto ker\u00e4ttiin marraskuun 2023 ja maaliskuun 2024 v\u00e4lill\u00e4 haastattelemalla kahdeksaa (n=8) ulkomaalaistaustaista sairaanhoitajaopiskelijaa. Tutkimukseen osallistujat olivat toisen ja kolmannen vuoden sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoita ja kotoisin It\u00e4-Euroopasta, Aasiasta, Af-rikasta ja Etel\u00e4-Amerikasta ja asuneet Suomessa 1\u201314 vuotta. Haastattelut toteutettiin suomeksi tai englanniksi osallistujien toiveen mukaan ja litteroitiin sanatarkasti. Aineisto analysoitiin fenomenografisella analyysimetodilla. \n\nFenomenografisen analyysin mukaan k\u00e4sitykset voitiin ryhmitell\u00e4 nelj\u00e4\u00e4n hierarkkisesti laajenevaan kuvauskategoriaan. Suppeimmillaan terveys n\u00e4htiin hoitoty\u00f6n teknisin\u00e4 toimintoina (kategoria I), ja laajimmillaan yleisen\u00e4 ja yht\u00e4l\u00e4isen\u00e4 oikeutena (kategoria IV). N\u00e4iden v\u00e4lille asettuivat kuvauskategoriat \u201dHoitajan oma terveys hoitoty\u00f6n toimintojen mahdollistajana\u201d (kategoria II) ja \u201dTerveys holistisena toimintana\u201d (kategoria III). Kuvauskategorioiden hierarkiarakenne tuli esiin kategoriasta toiseen siirrytt\u00e4ess\u00e4 kriittisin\u00e4 eroina niiss\u00e4 toistuvien teemojen v\u00e4lill\u00e4, joita olivat 1) potilaan rooli, 2) sairaanhoitajan rooli, 3) ty\u00f6yhteis\u00f6n rooli ja 4) hoitoty\u00f6n toteuttaminen. Tutkimuksen tulokset lis\u00e4\u00e4v\u00e4t ymm\u00e4rryst\u00e4 laadullisesti erilaisista tavoista k\u00e4sitt\u00e4\u00e4 ja merkityksellist\u00e4\u00e4 terveytt\u00e4 sairaanhoitajan ty\u00f6ss\u00e4 ulkomaalaistaustaisten sairaanhoitajaopiskelijoiden kuvaamana.
