Interdisciplinary training has helped to avoid duplication of work, promote better patient encounter, and achieve better rehabilitation outcomes. Only half of Finnish health care degree programs provide interdisciplinary training. The aim of this thesis was to investigate Finnish physiotherapy student's perceptions of their interdisciplinary competence and related background factors. In addition, it was investigated whether ethical competence, knowledge of roles and responsibilities and network competence explain physiotherapy student's interdisciplinary competence. The study was part of the Core Competencies of Physiotherapy Students -study and its results will be used as part of the validation of the student survey.

The survey data were collected from student members of Finnish physiotherapists in 2017–2018 (n = 198, response rate 14.9 %). In addition to background information, the survey included 122 statements related to the core competencies of physiotherapists (Likert 1–5), of which 20 were related to interdisciplinary competencies. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 28 software. Non-parametric data tests and binary logistic regression were used as analysis methods.

According to the results of the thesis, just over half (55.5 %) of physiotherapy students perceived their interdisciplinary competence were good. 67 % of the respondents considered their ethical competence to be good. A clear majority (87 %) felt that their knowledge of roles and responsibilities was good, but less than half of the respondents (48%) felt that their networking skills were good. Among the background variables, age over 30 but under 40 years (p = 0,014), final year of studies (p = < 0,001), post-graduate work experience (p = 0,045) and collaboration with other disciplines (p = 0,038) were statistically significantly associated with the perceived interdisciplinary competence of physiotherapy students. Students with a more positive perception of their ethical and social competence had a 4,7 times more positive perception of their interdisciplinary competence than students with a poor perception of their ethical and social competence (odds ratio: OR 4.7, confidence interval 1,523–14,364, p = 0.007). The model explained 16.6% of the observed result.

Based on the results of this thesis, Finnish physiotherapy student's interdisciplinary competence seems to develop with studies, work experience and professional cooperation. In addition, good ethical and social competence is associated with better interdisciplinary competence of physiotherapy students. The results help to understand the factors related to the development of interdisciplinary competence in physiotherapy and can be used in the development of rehabilitation education.
dc.description.abstract
Moniammatillisen osaamisen hyödyntämisellä kuntoutusprosessissa pyritään parantamaan terveydenhuollon ammattilaisten osaamisen tarkoituksenmukaista käyttöä kuntoutujan hyväksi ja terveydenhuoltojärjestelmän kuormituksen vähentämiseksi.
