Tutkimuksessa \u00e4\u00e4neen lukemani teksti on oma keskener\u00e4inen romaanik\u00e4sikirjoitus. Aineisto muodostuu \u00e4\u00e4neen puhutuista kommenteista, jotka nauhoitin, litteroin ja luokittelin temaattisen sis\u00e4ll\u00f6nanalyysin keinoin. Haluan tutkimuksessa tuulettaa vakiintuneita k\u00e4yt\u00e4nt\u00f6j\u00e4ni kirjoittajana ja tutkijana, sek\u00e4 hy\u00f6dynt\u00e4\u00e4 uusia menetelmi\u00e4 v\u00e4h\u00e4n tutkitun aiheen avaamiseksi. \n\n\u00c4\u00e4neen lukemisen yhteydess\u00e4 kirjaamani huomiot ovat yll\u00e4tt\u00e4v\u00e4n monipuolisia. Ne kattavat pieni\u00e4 teknisi\u00e4 korjausehdotuksia sek\u00e4 laajempia ideoita tekstin kehitt\u00e4miseen. Loin aineiston pohjalta kaksi erillist\u00e4 luokittelua. Ensimm\u00e4inen luokittelu j\u00e4i luonteeltaan liian tekniseksi. Tunnistin kuitenkin suuren m\u00e4\u00e4r\u00e4n tunteisiin liittyvi\u00e4 kommentteja ja niiden joukossa positiivisia, kehuvia kommentteja. Toisen luokittelun teemoissa nousi esiin t\u00e4rkeit\u00e4 proosallisia elementtej\u00e4 ja tasoja: kertomus, kerronta, rytmi ja s\u00e4vy. \u00c4\u00e4neen lukeminen auttoi tunnistamaan tasapuolisesti kaikkia n\u00e4it\u00e4 elementtej\u00e4 sek\u00e4 teknisempi\u00e4 korjauksia.\n\n\u00c4\u00e4neen lukemisesta, kommentoinnista sek\u00e4 tutkimuksen tekemisest\u00e4 syntyi laajempi reflektioprosessi. Huomaan suhtautuvani tekstiini ennen kaikkea positiivisemmin. Koen, ett\u00e4 menetelm\u00e4 toimi minulla hyvin ja k\u00e4yt\u00e4n sit\u00e4 mielell\u00e4ni uudelleen. Koen, ett\u00e4 sain \u00e4\u00e4neen lukemisella paljon monipuolisia kehitysaihioita tekstiini ja prosessi motivoi minua jatkamaan eteenp\u00e4in tekstin ty\u00f6st\u00f6\u00e4. Tutkimukseni perusteella suosittelen \u00e4\u00e4neen lukemista kirjoittamisen ty\u00f6kaluksi. Erityisesti se soveltuu k\u00e4ytett\u00e4v\u00e4ksi pidemm\u00e4ll\u00e4 kirjoitusprosessissa, kun teksti on jo huoliteltua, tai vain tiettyjen huomioiden etsimiseen. \u00c4\u00e4neen lukemista voi my\u00f6s k\u00e4ytt\u00e4\u00e4 keinona k\u00e4ynnist\u00e4\u00e4 tauolla ollutta kirjoitusty\u00f6t\u00e4 tai purkaa kirjoittajan blokkia. \n\nToivon, ett\u00e4 tutkimukseni toimii muistutuksena \u00e4\u00e4neen lukemisen menetelm\u00e4st\u00e4, joka tuntuu nyky\u00e4\u00e4n laajalti unohtuneen. My aim is to increase understanding of the observations and comments that a writer makes on their own text through reading it aloud, in order to make edits later. I read aloud a part of my own unfinished manuscript intended for a novel. The data consists of comments which I spoke aloud, then recorded, transcribed, and classified by means of thematic content analysis. Through the thesis work I wish to refresh my own entrenched practices as a writer and researcher. My aim is to make use of new methods to reveal more information about a subject that has hereto been little researched academically. \n\nThe observations that I recorded while reading aloud are surprisingly versatile. They range from small suggestions i.e. technical corrections to broader ideas to develop the text further. I created two thematic analyses based on the same data. The first classification felt too technical in nature. However, I recognized a significant number of comments referring to relating emotion. Amongst them, I found a group of positive, encouraging comments. In the second analysis, I grouped the codes into themes and dimensions concerning different aspects of writing prose: storyline, narrative voice, rhythm, and tonality, as well as technical corrections. In my process of reading and thinking aloud, I noted comments evenly from all these dimensions.\n\nReading aloud, commenting aloud, as well as carrying out the analysis created a wider process of reflection. I realize that I now see my text in a more positive light. The method worked very well for me as a writer, and I look forward to making use of it again. By experience of this study, reading aloud provides me with a versatile set of ideas for improving my text. Also, the process motivated me to continue working on my manuscript. Based on my study, I recommend reading aloud as a tool for writing. It is especially suited when already well advanced in the writing process, i.e. when the text is already more polished, or when the writer wishes to focus observation on a specific dimension. Reading aloud can also be used as a method to activate a paused writing assignment or even to release writer\u2019s block. \n\nI hope my study may act as a reminder of reading aloud, a method that seems largely forgotten today. I hope that my study will inspire writers, as well as students and teachers of writing, to utilize reading aloud in advancing the writing process.
